The annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational, a weeklong event dedicated to the art of plein-air painting, kicked off Sunday.

More than 600 guests attended the Quick Draw Paint Out, which took place at Heisler Park where 40 of the nation’s top plein-air artists completed their paintings in under two hours, according to a news release. A silent auction followed the paint out.

“This is the first time in recent memory that we have sold every Quick Draw painting in the silent auction,” said Rosemary Swimm, the executive director of Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters Assn. who co-organizes the event.

The invitational, put on by the association and Laguna Art Museum, included a Kids Paint Out with students from El Morro Elementary School, Thurston Middle School and Laguna Beach High School. Their paintings will be on display and for sale through Sunday in the museum’s Brief Gallery, with proceeds benefiting the school of the participating student, the release noted.

Remaining events include Outdoor Artists Demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Heisler Park amphitheater; a Collectors’ Soirée from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the art museum with $125 admission for members and $150 for nonmembers; and a Public Art Show and Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the museum, which is free to the public.
