Lab looking for student films

The Lab is celebrating its 20th birthday year by posing a challenge for local film students.

The Costa-Mesa anti-mall has put out a call for original 3-minute short films.

The sole requirement?

The Lab, home to retailers including Urban Outfitters, Buffalo Exchange, Lobby and Popkiller, as well as eateries such as Gypsy Den Café, Cafecito Organico and Zipangu, must be the backdrop.

This program is a joint venture between The Lab and the Newport Beach Film Festival, which is scheduled for April 25 to May 2.

Students can strike out on their own or team up with a maximum of two other counterparts from local high schools, junior colleges or art schools. Awards will be granted in each school category.

“We feel that film can uniquely capture the sights and sounds of life at The Lab so we’re starting there,” Lab owner and operator Shaheen Sadeghi said in a news release. “We’re planning an awesome year celebrating all the art mediums we can, since art is really the heart and soul of The Lab. This will involve music, fashion, crafts, dance, the spoken word and hybrids of all above.”

The deadline for entries is May 15.

Winners, to be revealed May 31, will be invited to the LAB-ster 20th Year and Still Underage VIP Dinner, which is in the pipeline for August.
