Police: Man hit with possible bat in Costa Mesa

A man used a baseball bat or large stick to attack a Costa Mesa resident Monday afternoon near Newport Boulevard and 22nd Street, police said.

A bystander saw the assault and called police to say she witnessed someone being hit atop the head with the weapon at about 3 p.m., said Lt. Greg Scott of the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Police and paramedics responded and found a 52-year-old man with large lacerations on his head, according to police.

He was transported to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach.

Scott said the victim was uncooperative and that the witness described the aggressor as a man in his 20s with a shaved head.

Police said they were unaware of a motive and had no further information on the incident.
