Classic car competition coming to beach

Share

Old-school style on four wheels — and two — is heading to the seashore Sunday.

The 10th annual Coastline Car Classic at Corona del Mar State Beach is expected to attract hundreds if not a couple thousand people, who will be able to gaze at more than 130 classic cars and motorcycles.

The event, which benefits the Irvine-based Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, is hosted by the Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce.

It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the gate. Beach parking is $15, or attendees can use the free shuttles that will leave from the Bank of America and OASIS Senior Center every 15 minutes.

The festivities also include live entertainment, vendor presentations, food and a judging ceremony.

“It’s going to be an exciting year,” said Pilar Hemry, the chamber’s operations and events manager. “A lot of great stuff has been added, a lot of new elements.”

New additions include food trucks, a flyover by a Lyon Air Museum plane and a pin-up girl pageant. About 1,500 to 2,000 visitors are expected, Hemry said.

The judges will look over the vehicles in the competition from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the awards ceremony starting at 2:30 p.m. There are 14 categories.

Dave Kunz and Art Gould will provide commentary. Kunz, of KABC, is the Los Angeles County TV station’s automotive commentator. Gould, of KPFK 90.7 FM, is the co-host of “The Car Show.”
