Jeannette York Merrilees
Jeannette York Merrilees, advocate for improved coastal access and parks, died peacefully at home on October 14, 2013. She was 83 years old and resided in Laguna Beach for 40 years. She helped lead movements that preserved open space and protected parkland in Orange and Laguna Beach, including Crystal Cove State Park. She also fought to preserve the Laguna greenbelt and improve public education. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Edward of Laguna Beach, her brother Edwin York of New Jersey; her three children: Craig of Sausalito, Neil of Half Moon Bay and Alison of Sacramento; and four grandchildren: Jenna Merrilees, Annika Merrilees, Andrew Paiva and Abigail Paiva. Instead of flowers, her family requests donations to Village Laguna or the Laguna Greenbelt.
