Laguna Beach police officers arrested six people during a DUI checkpoint late Friday and early Saturday, according to a department news release.

Police arrested five people on suspicion of driving under the influence and an additional person on another charge between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. in the 1500 block of North Coast Highway, the release said.

It added that

Laguna police screened 1,647 vehicles and cited or arrested four drivers for operating a vehicle without a license or for driving on a suspended or revoked license.

Police place checkpoints at locations that offer the greatest opportunity for deterring impaired drivers, according to the release.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, and 90 percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints, the release said.

A grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the NHTSA, funded the checkpoint.
