Greer's OC: Endless fun with Ruby

Ruby's Diner is hosting a free "Endless Summer" party from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Huntington Beach Pier, complete with burger cookout, free outdoor movie and stars from the iconic surf documentary. Director Bruce Brown, surfer Robert August and the star of "The Endless Summer II," Robert "Wingnut" Weaver will be signing autographs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. RubyBurgers and sodas will be sold for $5. All proceeds will be donated to Childhelp (, aiding victims of child abuse and neglect.

Visit playhouses for homeless charity

Help eliminate homelessness in Orange County by supporting HomeAid's 19th annual Project Playhouse. Seven dream playhouses are on display at the Irvine Spectrum Center's Giant Wheel Court through Sept. 5. For a $5 donation per person, you can view the amazing interiors through the playhouses' Dutch doors from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. There's even the first net-zero entry: an eco-friendly playhouse called the Ocean Adventure Lab designed by LPA Inc. (, an Irvine-based sustainable design firm. The Ocean Adventure Lab was built with reclaimed and recycled materials, natural wool insulation, a composite wood structure and its own source of renewable energy with photovoltaic panels that are both aesthetically attractive and energy efficient. The event culminates in a live auction for the playhouses from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 10 at a private residence in Crystal Cove in Newport Beach. Tickets to the Newport New Moon Sunset Gathering event include cocktails and hors d'oeuvres and can be bought at for $250 each. Market Place returns

The Orange County Market Place is back! After its brief hiatus during the Orange County Fair, the Market Place will reopen from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It's the best swap meet ever — 20 acres of great values and quality merchandise. If you haven't been in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised by the more than 1,000 items and foods available, plus the artisans and crafters corner and fun kids activities, too.
