Around Town: Musicals in your neighborhood

Some of the most underutilized forms of family entertainment are the theatrical performances put on by our area high schools. These students and faculty spend a lot of time and put a lot of heart into these productions and usually put on a show more than worth the price of admission.

Edison High School will be putting on the “Seussical in the Musical” at the Huntington Beach Union High School District Auditorium. The show includes characters from the writings of Dr. Seuss.

Shows are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 and 23 and 2:30 Feb. 23.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for children 12 and younger and Edison students with an ASB card.

After that, Marina High School is putting on “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at the Huntington Beach Union High School District Auditorium, 1901 Main St. Shows are 7 p.m. Feb. 28, March 1 and 2; and 2 p.m. March 2. Tennis for the Mission

Edison High School senior Kelly Nemes is organizing a tennis tournament as part of the school’s Center of International Business and Communications Studies.

The tournament is for high school players but she says adults are welcome. Proceeds from the event benefit Orange County Rescue Mission and struggling families, according to a news release.

There will be tennis, food and prizes.

The event is Feb. 24 at Costa Mesa Tennis Center, 880 Junipero Drive. Cost is $15 for singles, 9 a.m. to noon; $30 per team for doubles, 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, email kcnemes@aol.com.

Lazy Dog Donation

Huntington Beach-headquartered Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar will donate $15,180 to the Foodbank of Southern California.

According to a news release, the money is from the business’ 2012 holiday gift card fundraiser and a matching donation from Lazy Dog. The release states the money will allow for more than 1 million meals to be served.

This is the first year of the donation from Lazy Dog to the Foodbank. The release states that the donation translates to 30 meals for every $25 in gift cards sold.
