Community & Clubs: Plenty to pray about this week

Share

With the happenings in Boston and in West Texas fresh in our minds, the National Day of Prayer makes more sense than ever, says the Rev. Julie Elkins, president of the Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council and pastor at First United Methodist Church of Costa Mesa.

Different faiths will join “for common action in prayer” at 7 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church, she says.

The prayer breakfast will welcome clergy and members from a variety of faiths, including Jewish, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Muslim, Bahai, Sikh, Church of Jesus Christ, Latter-day Saints, First Church of Christ, Scientist, United Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, Unitarians, Lutherans, Episcopal and UCI Interfaith. All are welcome, even those without a religious affiliation.

The keynote speaker is Benjamin J. Hubbard, professor emeritus of comparative religion at Cal State Fullerton, who will speak on “The Importance of Interfaith Dialogue in Today’s World.”

The National Day of Prayer is an annual event established by an act of Congress to encourage Americans to pray for the nation, its people and their leaders, according to Elkins.

“Our breakfast program will also include representatives from the interfaith religious communities of Costa Mesa, Irvine and Newport Beach, who will pray from their own faith,” states Victoria Dendinger, breakfast chairwoman.

Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church is located at 2046 Mar Vista Drive, Newport Beach. The breakfast will conclude at 8:30 a.m..

Cost for the breakfast is $15 person or $120 for a table of eight. Sponsorship is $100. Reservations are requested by Friday to nmiinterfaith@aol.com. For more information on the council and the National Day of Prayer, visit nmiinterfaith.org.

Exchange Club Field of Honor

The public is invited to participate in the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor’s fourth annual Field of Honor from May 17 to 19 at Castaways Park, Newport Beach. The Field of Honor is an awesome sight: 1,776 U.S. flags posted along the paths and bluffs of the park in honor of all military men and women and in conjunction with Armed Forces Day on May 18. The dedication ceremony will be at noon that day.

The Field of Honor is one of the more moving experiences I have had in the harbor area, walking among the 1,776 U.S. flags, each dedicated to a past or current member of the armed forces. Anyone may dedicate a flag in honor of a family member or friend, or any member of the armed forces. Flags are available for $45 per honoree. For further details, go to https://www.nhexchange.org or email ExchangeFieldofHonor@yahoo.com.

Daily Pilot Community & Clubs Hall of Fame

Save June 14 for the fifth annual Daily Pilot Community & Clubs Hall of Fame luncheon, being held at noon at American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 in Newport Beach. Do you know someone involved in a community group, service club or congregation who has given time, talent and even treasure and should be inducted into the Hall of Fame? How about the Crossing, a congregation that helped many an elementary school upgrade its campus with daylong work parties? How about the volunteer at the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, Share Our Selves or the Sister City Program committee? Costa Mesa and Newport Beach have some great volunteers who don’t make the society pages but volunteer out of love for the community. For more information, email me at jdeboom@aol.com.
