Community & Clubs: Honoring news coverage of women and girls

Dawn Marie Lemonds, a member of the Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor, has joined as co-chair the planning committee of the National Women’s Coalition Against Violence & Exploitation (NWCAVE) for the Jane Velez-Mitchell Journalism Award.

The Jane Velez-Mitchell Journalism Award is named after the award-winning journalist, host of “Jane Velez-Mitchell” on HLN. The award recognizes excellence in the coverage of news of local, national and international significance. It will be given to either a print or broadcast journalist who has used the power of media and his or her position to highlight violence against women and girls.

Violence takes the form of domestic abuse, human trafficking, kidnapping and more.

The award will be presented Jan. 18 in Los Angeles during the Southwest Conference Against Trafficking. Lemonds reports that applications are now available at nwcave.org/pressroom/jvmjournalismaward.html. Deadline for submission is Sept. 30.

New officers for Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa installed new officers in July, with local attorney Bob Merring accepting the presidency from outgoing President AJ Thielen. Joining Merring in club leadership are Gary Konecne, president-elect; Jerry Morris, vice president for policy and ethics; Richard Oberreiter, public relations; John Kerr, international service director; Ron Gill, vocational service director; Dick Holmgren, the Rotary Foundation; Dan Hoffmann, club foundation treasurer; Art Walton, community service director; Martin Pitha, secretary; and Steve Speer, club service director.

The Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa has been serving the communities of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa in addition to touching lives around the world through Rotary International since 1939.

The old stereotypes of service club membership have fallen away over the past decade. The club has members in their 20s and over 80. While Rotary was originally founded as a businessmen’s networking and service group, women have been the fastest-growing segment of the Rotary population for more than 20 years.

The club meets at 5:45 p.m. Thursdays for cocktails, with dinner at 6:15, at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, 1601 Bayside Drive, Corona del Mar. This offers a great opportunity to get together with others who share a commitment to Rotary’s tradition of service above self. Where else can a young up-and-coming professional share dinner with a successful retired CEO as equals dedicated to shared service?

Rotarians are business leaders, professionals, managers, educators, retirees, young entrepreneurs and more. They come from every political and racial background. In Rotary’s second century, there is no “typical” Rotarian. The modern Rotarian is simply committed to working with others to make a difference and to subscribing to Rotary’s Four-Way Test as a way of leading an ethical life and an ethical business.
