Around Town: Tourney raises $40,000 for seniors


The Huntington Beach Council on Aging raised more than $40,000 during the 21st annual On Course golf tournament.

First Bank and Capital Source Bank were title sponsors for the event, held in Huntington Beach. A silent auction and raffle raised more than $5,300.


Marina Casino rakes it in

Marina High School Education Foundation's Casino Night, Texas Hold 'Em event and silent auction has raised $10,500.

The event was held Oct. 4 at the Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley and included dinner, a poker tournament, casino games and a silent auction.

It was the first joint fundraiser for multiple campus booster groups. They are planning more casino nights in the future, according to a news release.

Marina High School's Educational Foundation is a nonprofit, 100% volunteer-run organization that raises money for Marina High School in Huntington Beach. The group is currently raising money for facility improvements, such as a new turf field, weight room, pool and performing arts facility.

Medical degree from Uniformed Services

Army Capt. Scott Fleming graduated recently from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md.

Fleming, a 2003 graduate of Marina High School, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University in Utah.

He received a medical degree from the tuition-free university and was commissioned to the rank of captain, with a minimum seven-year active-duty service commitment. The education prepares students to be healthcare practitioners and scientists.

Fleming is a physician assigned to the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and has served in the military for four years.

He is the son of Merl and Merilee Fleming of Huntington Beach.


Trained in military discipline

Air Force Airman Brandon T. Haynes recently graduated from basic training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

He is a 2012 graduate of Marina High School.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. He earned four credits toward an associate degree in applied science.

Haynes is the son of Angela Haynes of Midway.
