College Roundup: Vanguard women’s volleyball sweeps Hope International

Grace Fonville and Camaleh Noel each had nine kills for the Vanguard University women’s volleyball team as the Lions swept Hope International 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference home finale.

Samantha Arellano added eight kills for Vanguard (23-7, 12-5 in conference), which closes out conference play at San Diego Christian on Nov. 9.

Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Irvine 1: The Anteaters dropped their fifth straight Big West Conference match on the road on Saturday night.

UC Irvine (4-17, 1-8 in conference) plays at UC Riverside on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

FOOTBALL

Saddleback 63, Golden West 38: Zach Lewis had four touchdown passes for the Rustlers in Saturday’s National Southern League game at Mission Viejo High.

Jeremiah Wright had four catches for 141 yards and a touchdown for Golden West (3-5, 1-2). Trevor Hobbs, KC Carr and former Edison High standout David Atencio also caught touchdown passes.

Saddleback improved to 8-0 overall, 3-0 in league.

Golden West continues league play with a home game against Southwestern on Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.

Grossmont 27, Orange Coast 18: David Hernandez and Jacob Avalos each had touchdown runs for the Pirates in Saturday’s National Southern League game at OCC.

The Pirates fell to 1-7 overall, 0-3 in conference.

Orange Coast plays at Riverside on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Santa Barbara 15, UC Irvine 10: Casey Lynton and Jason Evezard each recorded a hat-trick, but the visiting Anteaters fell to 6-11 overall and 0-3 in the Golden Coast Conference.

Ivan Gvozdanovic had a game-high four goals for the fourth-ranked Gauchos (18-5, 2-1).

MEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 4, William Jessup 1: Joe Barry had a goal and two assists to lead the host Lions on Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference match.

Vanguard (11-5, 6-2 in conference) also received goals from Andrew Robles, Isaac Pinto and Miguel Tapia.

Cal State Northridge 1, UC Irvine 0: The visiting Matadors scored in the 29th minute of Saturday’s Big West Conference match.

With the loss, UC Irvine (7-6-5, 4-2-1 in conference) was denied a chance at sharing the conference regular-season title, an accolade that went solely to UC Davis (5-1-1 in conference).

The Anteaters begin the Big West Tournament with a home match Wednesday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 8, William Jessup 0: Myranda Baca had a hat-trick for the Lions in Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference match at home.

Karla Navarro, Ayanna Suarez, Kim Benner, Emily Miramontes and Marielisa Hallam also scored for Vanguard (11-2-2, 7-1).

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

The UC Irvine men’s cross-country team came in seventh place (208 points) in the Big West Championships on Saturday at the UC Riverside Ag/Ops Course.

Sophomore Sebastian Bautista led the Anteaters with a 33rd-place showing, as he finished the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes 7.62 seconds.

Sophomore Christian Hernandez (42nd, 26:38.53), freshman Omar Adel (48th, 27:10.20), senior Jhamani Long (49th, 27:10.64) and freshman Jason Messner (30:50.74) filled out the scoring group.

Cal Poly topped Cal State Fullerton 44-53 for the team championship, led by junior Jake Ritter, who won the race in 23:43.69.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Sophomore Hannah Chau earned all-conference honors with a fifth-place finish in the Big West Championships on Saturday at the UC Riverside Ag/Ops Course.

Chau completed the 6,000-meter course in 20:51.83, leading UCI to fifth place (140 points) as a team.

The Anteaters’ scoring quintet included sophomore Patricia Sanchez (28th, 21:52.84), senior Mariah Theologidy (30th, 21:58.27), freshman Claire Livengood (42nd, 22:18.32) and senior Brenda Dorantes (45th, 22:23.63).

Cal State Fullerton beat UC Davis 44-50 for the team championship. Cal Poly senior Miranda Daschian won the race in 20:20.62.
