College Roundup: UC Irvine men’s basketball beats UC San Diego in exhibition

Evan Leonard had 15 points to lead the UC Irvine men’s basketball team to an 80-64 win over UC San Diego on Friday night in an exhibition game at Bren Events Center.

Collin Welp had 12 points and nine rebounds, while Eyassu Worku and Tommy Rutherford each poured in 11 points for the Anteaters.

UCI will open its season on the road at the University of San Diego on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

San Bernardino Valley 109, Golden West 89: Eric Watson had 18 points, 10 rebounds and one blocked shot in the Rustlers’ season opener in the Don Gehler Memorial Tournament on Friday at Miramar College in San Diego.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard 3, Life Pacific 0: Grace Fonville had 10 kills as the Lions swept 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Friday on the road.

Aubryn Coale and Calista Noel each had eight kills for Vanguard (22-7, 11-5 in conference). Kylie Garrett had 19 assists, and Sam Rice added 17 digs.

Vanguard hosts No. 24 Hope International on Saturday at 5 p.m. in its final home match of the regular season.

Orange Coast 3, Santa Ana 1: Mahina Kenoi had 15 kills and 19 digs in the Pirates’ 25-20, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21 Orange Empire Conference win at home Friday.

Lucrezia Lualdi contributed 14 kills and 21 digs for second-place Orange Coast (16-4, 9-3 in conference).

Cypress 3, Golden West 0: The visiting Rustlers fell to 11-6 overall and 5-6 in the Orange Empire Conference after the Chargers won 25-15, 25-11, 25-16 on Friday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3, UC Irvine 2 (OT): The host Mustangs scored the winning goal in the 94th minute of Friday’s Big West Conference match.

Piper Wurth and Kala McDaniel both scored second-half goals for UC Irvine (4-12-1, 3-3-1 in conference). Amber Huff, Maddie Newsom and Aleah Kelley all had assists.

The Anteaters’ loss, coupled with UC Santa Barbara’s win against UC Riverside, eliminated UCI from Big West Tournament contention. The Anteaters had made the tournament three consecutive seasons.

UCI closes out its season at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Orange Coast 2, Irvine Valley 1: Julie Orellana scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute for the host Pirates in an Orange Empire Conference match on Friday.

Delani Guyot had a goal and an assist for Orange Coast (6-10-2, 3-6-1 in conference).

Saddleback 3, Golden West 0: The Rustlers lost their second straight Orange Empire Conference match at home Friday, dropping to 6-8-2 overall and 3-6-1 in conference play.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Jack Kramer Collegiate Tournament: The UC Irvine doubles pairing of Flora Amiri and Jessica Tsukiji lost to Baylor’s Anastasia Kharitonova and Angie Shakhraichuk by a score of 8-3 in the Round of 16 on Friday in Rolling Hills Estates.

MEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 1, Irvine Valley 1: Takumi Taniguchi scored in the 86th minute for the Pirates in Friday’s Orange Empire Conference road match.

Orange Coast is 10-3-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the conference.
