High School Roundup: Edison football opens with rout of Trabuco Hills

Braeden Boyles had four passing touchdowns, and the Edison High School football team defeated Trabuco Hills 55-7 on Friday afternoon in a nonleague season opener at Huntington Beach High School.

Nico Brown, Tyler Gioia, Bradley Luna, Christian Hazen and RJ Frahm each had a receiving touchdown. Mateo Liau added a rushing score.

Boyles, a senior, said putting a big number on the scoreboard was nice. Doing it in the first game after the coronavirus pandemic put the season in jeopardy made it feel even better.

“It made it that much sweeter,” Boyles said. “Winning this game would have been huge regardless, but with that win and all the uncertainty in not knowing if we would ever play another high school game, it felt amazing.”

Austin Grbic and Gavin Shappell both returned an interception for a touchdown for the Chargers.

Corona del Mar 38, Palos Verdes 21: Sophomore quarterback David Rasor threw three touchdown passes for Corona del Mar in Friday’s nonleague season opener at Costa Mesa High.

Tommy Griffin caught two touchdown passes for CdM, and Ryan Zimmerman had the other scoring reception. Jason Vicencio added two rushing touchdowns.

Jack Salmon had an interception on defense for CdM, which won its 17th straight game after going 16-0 during the 2019 season.

The Sea Kings play at Los Alamitos on Friday in a Sunset League opener.

Newport Harbor 24, Yorba Linda 23: Kashton Henjum caught the game-winning touchdown from Nick Kim in the fourth quarter, as the host Sailors rallied to win Friday night in a nonleague game to open the season.

Kim threw for three touchdowns, with two of those scores going to Henjum. Josiah Lamarque also had a receiving touchdown for the Sailors.

Sunny Hills 56, Fountain Valley 14: The Barons were outscored 35-0 in the second half of Friday’s nonleague season opener on the road.

Jimmy Russell had a first-half touchdown pass to Preston Amarillo for Fountain Valley, and Benjamin Pham added a 16-yard rushing touchdown.

Fountain Valley begins Sunset League play at Huntington Beach on Friday.

Garden Grove 16, Costa Mesa 7: The visiting Mustangs led 7-3 at halftime, but two second-half touchdowns for the Argonauts prevented Costa Mesa from pulling off the upset in Friday’s nonleague opener.

Nick Burton threw a touchdown pass to Ryan Bourbeau for the Mustangs’ score.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 8, Orange Lutheran 3: Emma Lineback, Nicole Struss and Rachael Carver each scored two goals for the Breakers in Saturday’s nonleague game at home.

Emma Singer and Molly Renner both scored once for Laguna Beach (4-0).

Estancia 11, Tustin 8: Casandra Corrigan, Caroline Conner and Isabel Kehoe each recorded a hat-trick for the Eagles in Saturday’s nonleague road match.

Giannina Bauer recorded seven saves for Estancia (3-1).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Estancia 16, Tustin 9: Micah Gniffke and Logan Richard each scored six goals for the visiting Eagles in a nonleague game on Saturday.

Griffin Beth stopped eight shots in net for Estancia (6-0).
