High School Roundup: Edison boys, Laguna Beach’s Mateo Bianchi win in Surf League cross-country final

The Edison High boys’ cross-country team defeated Laguna Beach 33-49 in the Surf League final at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Jeff Ritter (third, 16 minutes 33.0 seconds), Wylie Cleugh (fourth, 16:37.8) and Raoul Kelly (fifth, 16:45.4) had top-five showings for the Chargers. Christopher Chan was 10th (16:54.8) and Luke Fowler 11th (16:56.1).

Edison coach Brian Brierly said the win marked the first league title for the school’s boys’ cross-country program since 2000.

Laguna Beach senior Mateo Bianchi, bound for UCLA, won the race in 15:59.6.

Newport Harbor finished third with 51 points, and Los Alamitos was fourth with 82 points.

Wave League: Dezi Hernandez ran 15:34.0 to win the race and lead the Barons to a 24-45 win over Huntington Beach in the Wave League final on Saturday at Central Park.

Benjamin Prado (third, 16:16.1) and Shane Hill (fourth, 16:17.3) also delivered strong performances for the Barons.

It was a photo finish for the individual league championship, as Huntington Beach’s Nolan Walt (15:35.2) challenged Hernandez to the end.

Marina was third with 68 team points, and Corona del Mar came in fourth with 94 points.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

As they did for much of the season, Marina’s Makena Castillo (18:04.3) and Marikay Schwab (18:17.2) claimed the top two spots in a race for the Vikings, who topped Huntington Beach 32-42 for the Wave League title Saturday at Central Park.

Corona del Mar’s Melisse Djomby-Enyawe (third, 18:31.1) and Huntington Beach’s Claire Lewis (fourth, 18:38.9) and Quinn Roldan (fifth, 18:53.4) rounded out the top five.

In the team standings, Corona del Mar finished third with 50 points, and Edison placed fourth with 115 points.

Surf League: Kaho Cichon ran 17:53.5, the fastest time by a girl at the Sunset Conference finals Saturday, to lead Fountain Valley over Los Alamitos 38-52 in the Surf League final at Central Park.

Other locals to finish in the top five in the race were Laguna Beach’s Melanie Falkowski (second, 18:22.8), Fountain Valley’s Lauren Berg (fourth, 18:41.8) and Newport Harbor’s Emma Scheumann (fifth, 18:48.9).

Laguna Beach came in third as a team with 59 points, and Newport Harbor was fourth with 69 points.

FOOTBALL

Laguna Beach 40, Jurupa Valley 0: Will Bingham had three touchdown passes for the Breakers in Friday’s nonleague season opener on the road.

David Dworakowski, Evan Louch and Jack Arntz all caught touchdowns for Laguna Beach, while Jackson Golden and Tyler Fields had rushing touchdowns.

Estancia 35, St. Margaret’s 16: The Eagles stunned the Tartans with 35 straight second-half points for Friday’s nonleague win at home.

Coach Mike Bargas said that Lucas Pacheco carried the load in the running game for Estancia (1-1), while Ethan Rodriguez had a defensive touchdown on a scoop and score.

Bargas, who said he had to play Beto Sotomayor, Colby LeCours and Oscar Vasquez at quarterback due to two quarterbacks exiting with injury, added that it was one of the best wins he’s been involved in during his time coaching at Estancia and Newport Harbor.

Bolsa Grande 21, Los Amigos 20: The host Lobos were edged by the Matadors on Friday in a Garden Grove League opener at Garden Grove High School.

Los Amigos is scheduled to face Santiago next week.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Huntington Beach 12, Newport Harbor 11: The Oilers clinched the outright Surf League title with Friday’s win at Newport Harbor High.

Zach Bettino scored four goals for Huntington Beach (6-0 in league), while Ryder Dodd and Tyler Padua scored three goals each. Gabe Haddad made seven saves.

Eli Liechty paced Newport Harbor (3-2 in league) with seven goals.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Pacifica Christian Orange County 7, Capistrano Valley Christian 0: Buze Harrison scored two goals for the Tritons in Friday’s home opener at Orange County Great Park.

Logan Bray, Talia Proctor, Colleen O’Callaghan, Sam Davidson and Payton Dobrick also scored for Pacifica Christian (2-0). Goalkeeper Jo Snyder made two saves to preserve the shutout.

SOFTBALL

Newport Harbor 16, Western 0: Eliana Gottlieb and Kendall Kelly each drove in three runs for the host Sailors on Friday in a Savanna Showcase game.

Kori Villeneuve and Lindsey Blanchfield each added two hits and two RBI for Newport Harbor.

McKayla Cotton struck out seven over three innings in the pitching circle.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Calvary Chapel 0: Buzz Hodson provided 15 kills with no hitting errors for the host Tritons, who won Friday’s nonleague season-opening match 25-21, 25-20, 25-16.

Tritons coach Timothy Maruyama said that Matthew MacPherson and Dan DeMars served well, allowing Pacifica Christian to mount some key scoring runs.
