High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ soccer earns emotional win over Mayfair

Brielle Benedict and Jenna McConnaughey scored goals as the Newport Harbor High School girls’ soccer team earned a 2-0 nonleague win at Lakewood Mayfair on Thursday.

Kenna Robar assisted both goals for the Sailors (3-0-1), while goalkeepers Emily Park and Jessica Gardner combined on the shutout.

After the match, Newport Harbor coach Justin Schroeder said his players, who all had “Sal” written on their bodies and hearts drawn, presented white roses to Mayfair’s players. The Newport Harbor program also presented Mayfair with a “Sal’s Cup” trophy in honor of late Mayfair girls’ soccer coach Sal Marroquin, with plans to inscribe the dates of future contests between the programs on the cup.

Schroeder, who formerly coached at Bellflower, was a good friend of Marroquin. Marroquin died on Jan. 25 at the age of 43 of an apparent heart attack.

Newport Harbor hosts Studio City Harvard-Westlake on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

FOOTBALL

Whittier 68, Costa Mesa 20: The Mustangs fell to 0-3 after Thursday’s nonleague home loss.

Costa Mesa opens Orange Coast League play with a road game against Orange on April 1 at El Modena High.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Ocean View 11, Segerstrom 7: Andrew Oldag and Lucas Salama swept in doubles for the Seahawks in Thursday’s Golden West League match.

Daniel Vasilevko in singles, as well as Kyle Daniels and Jackson Englar-Carlson in doubles, all had key wins for Ocean View (4-0 in league).

The Seahawks play at Garden Grove on Thursday with sole possession of first place in league on the line.
