High School Roundup: Edison softball notches walk-off win versus Huntington Beach

Izabella Martinez had a walk-off single to lead the Edison High School softball team to a 4-3 upset win over Huntington Beach on Tuesday in a Surf League game.

Isabella Espinoza went four for four with three runs scored for the Chargers. Emma Mendoza had two hits and two runs batted in, and Jenna Gorden also had two hits.

Kaitlyn Reynolds threw 4 2/3 shutout innings, striking out three for Edison (6-7, 2-2 in the Surf League).

Mikayla Carman homered for Huntington Beach (16-3, 3-1). Emma Francisco had three hits, and Sophia Knight also had two hits for the Oilers.

Los Alamitos 3, Marina 1: Nyah Veals had an infield single that scored the Vikings’ run Tuesday in a Surf League game at home.

Heather Nugent threw five innings, allowing six hits and two runs with no walks for Marina (10-4, 1-3).

Newport Harbor 5, Fountain Valley 4: Eliana Gottlieb went three for four with two runs batted in to lead the visiting Sailors in a Wave League game on Tuesday.

Lily Larkins also had three hits, and Lindsey Blanchfield turned in a two-hit effort which included a triple and a run driven in for Newport Harbor (8-4, 3-0).

McKayla Cotton threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out three to earn the win. Gabriella DiFrancesco struck out a pair in earning the save.

CJ Garcia went three for three with a home run, a double and two RBIs for Fountain Valley (3-11, 1-2). Abigail Hasty had two hits, and Brooke Pace also homered in the contest.

BASEBALL

Huntington Beach 4, Edison 1: Adyn Lucero allowed one earned run in four innings, picking up the win for the Oilers in Tuesday’s Surf League opener at Huntington Beach High.

Ben Jacobs allowed no runs in three shutout relief innings for Huntington Beach (12-5, 1-0 in league). Edison is now 9-8, 0-1 in league.

The teams play again Thursday at Edison.

Corona del Mar 7, Laguna Beach 3: Ethan Watson and Max Lane each hit home runs for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Wave League opener at Laguna Beach High.

Watson finished two for three with two runs batted in, while Lane was two for four with an RBI.

Charlie Mannon had three hits, including a pair of doubles, for Corona del Mar (12-4, 1-0 in league).

Nick Bonn was three for three for Laguna Beach (6-8, 0-1 in league).

Los Alamitos 8, Fountain Valley 0: Keith Aguilar and Adam Baggetta each had two hits for the Barons in Tuesday’s Surf League game on the road.

Fountain Valley (12-6, 0-1 in league) hosts the Griffins on Thursday.

Marina 2, Newport Harbor 1: The Vikings earned the tight win in Tuesday’s Wave League opener at Marina High.

Marina (9-10-1) travels to play at Newport Harbor (8-7) on Thursday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 37, Huntington Beach 29: Dorothy Schwenck had a team-high 12 points to lead the host Sea Kings, who handed the Oilers their first loss of the season.

Trasara Alexander also had 10 points for CdM (11-4, 3-0). Makena Tomlinson, Sarah Audiss and Haley Esquino each scored four points.

Andie Payne scored 17 points to pace Huntington Beach (10-1, 2-1), followed by Jessica Doke with seven points.

Newport Harbor 58, Marina 34: Chase Dionio had 16 points, six assists and six steals for the Sailors on Tuesday in a Wave League game at home.

Cydney Jover also matched the team-high mark with 16 points for Newport Harbor (9-2, 3-0). Emma Coatsworth and Willa Rath turned in identical lines of six points, seven rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.

Kate Bland also had eight points, and Emma Fults chipped in with four points and nine rebounds for the Sailors.

Marina dropped to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in Wave League play.

Calvary Chapel 64, Estancia 32: Alejandra Meza had 10 points for Estancia (3-8, 2-3) in an Orange Coast League road game.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 75, Santa Ana 56: Jordan Martin had 14 points and five rebounds for the Mustangs in Tuesday’s Orange Coast League game at Costa Mesa High.

Christian Dasca had 12 points and nine assists for Costa Mesa (7-7, 4-1 in league), which finished the first half of league play in second place behind Calvary Chapel.

Costa Mesa returns to action with a game at Saddleback on Thursday.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, Huntington Beach 0: Brendan Read led the visiting Sailors with 12 kills in a 25-11, 25-19, 25-21 sweep of the Oilers on Tuesday in a Surf League match.

Jake Read added 11 kills for Newport Harbor (10-3, 3-1).

Huntington Beach dropped to 8-3 overall and 1-3 in league.

Ocean View 3, Westminster 0: Ethan Mayfield had eight kills and 10 digs to lead the Seahawks on Tuesday in a Golden West League match on the road.

Jeremy Roe had four kills and a team-high 13 digs for Ocean View (2-9, 2-5). Isaac Ruedas had five kills, 10 digs and three service aces. Alan Robles distributed 25 assists, and Sean Andrews added five kills for the Seahawks.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Newport Harbor 4, Fountain Valley 0: Brielle Benedict scored three goals for the Sailors in Tuesday’s Wave League finale at Newport Harbor High.

Laine Briggs also scored for Newport Harbor (9-2-4, 4-1-1 in league).

Briggs had two assists for the Sailors, while Anto Russo and Alyssa Sims had one assist each. Jessica Gardner made two saves to secure the Sailors’ 11th shutout of the season.

Fountain Valley finished 1-10-4 overall, and 0-6 in league.

Newport Harbor wins the league outright if Laguna Beach (6-3, 4-1) loses at Marina (8-3-3, 2-2-1) on Wednesday, and is co-champion with the Breakers if Laguna Beach ties.

Laguna Beach can clinch the outright title with a victory.

BOYS’ GOLF

Costa Mesa 248, Westminster 287: Cristopher Rodriguez was the medalist for the Mustangs with a seven-over-par 42 on the front nine of Meadowlark Golf Club in Tuesday’s Orange Coast League match.

Costa Mesa (4-2 overall and in league) tees off against crosstown rival Estancia in the Battle for the Bell on Wednesday at Costa Mesa Country Club.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Costa Mesa 235, Katella 242: The Mustangs’ Sydney Ngo and the Knights’ Ylianna Fernandez were co-medalists for the Orange Coast League contest on Tuesday.

Both golfers carded a five-over-par 34 at Brea Creek Golf Course.

Costa Mesa (4-3 overall and in league) squares off with Estancia on Wednesday at Costa Mesa Country Club.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Los Alamitos 11, Newport Harbor 10 (OT): The Sailors suffered their first Sunset League loss Tuesday on the road.

Newport Harbor (9-5, 1-1 in league) plays at Edison on Thursday.
