High School Roundup: Costa Mesa’s Sydney Ngo wins at Orange Coast League girls’ golf finals

Freshman Sydney Ngo took first place in the Orange Coast League girls’ golf finals on Tuesday at Costa Mesa Country Club.

Ngo carded an eight-over-par 78 on Tuesday over an 18-hole round on the Mesa Linda course, taking her two-day, 27-hole total to 118 for the tournament.

Costa Mesa coach Marlon Liotta said Ngo is the first girls’ golfer for the Mustangs to win at league finals.

Ngo has qualified for the CIF Southern Section Southern Regional, which will be held at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills on Wednesday, June 2.

Also qualifying for the regional tournament from Estancia were Lexi Thorpe (second, 120) and Lexi Jaeger (fourth, 131).

Danielle Breitweiser (tied for seventh, 147) also medaled for the Eagles as one of the top 12 finishers.

BOYS’ WRESTLING

No. 4 Fountain Valley 74, Beckman 3: The Barons opened the CIF Southern Section Division 2 dual meet wrestling championships with a dominant showing at home on Tuesday night.

Aidan Nguyen (106 pounds), Matthew Phillips (113), Sean Solis (138), Kade Ayres (145), Hercules Windrath (160), TJ McDonnell (170), Max Wilner (182), Ryland Whitworth (195) and Jasen Harviston (220) recorded pins for the Barons.

Luis Ramirez (132) and Zach Parker (152) also earned victories by major decision for Fountain Valley.

Fountain Valley (4-1) remains at home to face Yucaipa (7-1) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Laguna Hills 77, Edison 3: The Chargers fell to the host Hawks in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs on Tuesday night.

Edison (2-2) received an at-large selection into the bracket as the second-place team in the Surf League this season.

Laguna Hills (7-2) moves on to a quarterfinals dual meet at home against second-seeded Palm Desert (5-0) on Saturday.

Newport Harbor 48, Cerritos 33: The Sailors earned a first-round win at home in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 dual meet wrestling championships.

Kobey Khan (120), Giovanni Sabatasso (126), Matthew Pinon (132), Joshua Martinez (138), Jackson Larner (182) and Aidan Gassel (195) earned victories by fall for the Sailors.

Avery MacKinnon (145) and Rodolfo Munoz (220) also received walkovers for an additional 12 team points.

Newport Harbor (3-5) will face Moreno Valley’s Valley View on the road Saturday at 1 p.m.

No. 2 Corona del Mar: The defending champion Sea Kings had a bye in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 bracket.

Corona del Mar will face Menifee Heritage at home in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 3 p.m. Heritage advanced past Westlake Village’s Westlake in the first round.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

CIF Southern Section Division 2 finals

Ivan Nghi of Fountain Valley won the 100-yard butterfly on Tuesday at Santa Margarita High.

Nghi, a senior, touched first in 48.84 seconds. He also placed third in the 100 breaststroke, in 55.05.

Other top-eight finishers included Jake Kubichek of Corona del Mar, who was seventh in the 200 individual medley in 1 minute 54.57 seconds and seventh in the breaststroke (57.30).

Will Kelly of Laguna Beach was fifth in the 100 freestyle (46.98) and eighth in the 50 freestyle (21.52).

Carter Park of CdM was seventh in the 100 butterfly (51.28).

CdM’s 200 freestyle relay team finished fifth in 1:27.63, followed by Laguna Beach in sixth in 1:27.85. The Sea Kings’ 400 freestyle relay team also finished seventh in 3:12.45, followed by Fountain Valley in eighth (3:14.02).

Corona del Mar finished eighth in the team standings, while Laguna Beach placed ninth.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

CIF Southern Section Division 2 finals

Huntington Beach’s Summer West won the 500-yard freestyle Tuesday at Santa Margarita High.

West, a senior, touched first in a school-record time of 4:54.88. She also placed fifth in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.72.

Huntington Beach’s Grace Brehm placed sixth in the 50 free in 24.29.

The Oilers placed 13th as a team.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Laguna Beach 67, Cypress 46: Nolan Naess scored 29 points for the Breakers in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs Tuesday at Laguna Beach High.

Chase Hall added 12 points for Laguna Beach (15-3), which will play either Santa Monica Crossroads or Sonora in the second round Friday.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 10, Corona Santiago 4: The visiting Sailors advanced on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Newport Harbor (8-10) will travel to take on No. 3-seeded Foothill (11-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula 10, Edison 8: The Chargers dropped Tuesday’s match in the wildcard round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs on the road.

Edison (11-7) was the fourth-place team in the Sunset League this season.

SOFTBALL

Huntington Beach 4, Marina 2: Sophia Knight had two hits, a run scored and a run batted in to lead the host Oilers in a Surf League game on Tuesday.

Mikayla Carman, Devyn Greer and Gillian Gordon each drove in a run for Huntington Beach (20-4, 7-2).

Anaya Togia had two hits and knocked in two runs for Marina (11-9, 2-7).
