High School Roundup: Corona del Mar boys’ volleyball ousts Mater Dei in Division 1 opener

Luke Chandler had 10 kills and two blocks to lead the Corona del Mar High School boys’ volleyball team to a 26-24, 26-24, 25-13 win over Mater Dei on Wednesday at home in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Vanis Buckholz and George Bruening each had seven kills and four blocks for CdM (9-2). Sterling Foley added seven kills, and Buddy Cohen had five kills and two blocks.

Grant Dvorak provided 21 assists to go with four kills and two blocks, and Quinn Welton added eight digs.

The No. 3-seeded Sea Kings play at No. 2 Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (10-2) on Saturday in the semifinals.

No. 4 Newport Harbor 3, San Clemente 1: Rees Clasen had 15 kills to lead the host Sailors to a 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 30-28 win on Wednesday in a Division 1 quarterfinal match.

Brendan Read had 14 kills for Newport Harbor (13-3). Jake Read added 11 kills, seven digs, two blocks and two service aces.

Newport Harbor will play host to top-seeded Los Angeles Loyola (13-0) in the semifinals on Saturday.

No. 2 Huntington Beach 3, Burbank Burroughs 0: Liam Phinizy paced the visiting Oilers with 10 kills in their 25-16, 26-24, 25-16 win on Wednesday in a Division 2 quarterfinal match.

Trent Douphner added six kills and seven aces for Huntington Beach (13-4). Will Lawler also had four blocks.

Huntington Beach will be on the road to take on Servite (12-7) in the semifinals on Saturday.

Palm Desert Xavier Prep 3, Estancia 1: The Eagles dropped their first-round match in the Division 6 playoffs on the road by a score of 25-17, 21-25, 25-16, 25-19 on Tuesday.

Estancia, which was second place in the Orange Coast League this season, finished with an overall record of 5-5.

The match had been postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test in the Eagles’ program, Estancia athletic director Nate Goellrich confirmed. Estancia was in quarantine until Monday, May 24.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 67, Montrose St. Monica Academy 61: Aiden Spallone had 28 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Mustangs in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA playoffs Wednesday at Costa Mesa High.

Blake Wolf added 10 points and five rebounds for Costa Mesa (12-6), which plays at Hawthorne in the second round Friday night.

Lakewood St. Anthony 67, Pacifica Christian Orange County 56: Tanner Deal scored 13 points for the Tritons in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Wednesday on the road.

Houston Mallette added 13 points for Pacifica Christian, which finished its season with a 7-9 record.

Marina 56, Garden Grove 46: The Vikings won on the road Wednesday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs.

Marina (12-7) plays at Lompoc Cabrillo in the second round Friday.

Northwood 65, Ocean View 48: The Golden West League champions saw their season end with Wednesday’s home loss in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs.

Ocean View, which had a nine-game winning streak snapped, finished its season 11-7.

Sage Hill 74, Santa Monica New Roads 50: The Lightning moved on after winning at home in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4A playoffs on Wednesday night.

Sage Hill (14-7) hosts Riverside Arlington in the second round Friday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

JSerra 9, Marina 9 (JSerra wins 82-76 on games): The No. 2-seeded Vikings’ season ended Wednesday in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs on the road.

Peter Liang, Vincent Hoang and Bradley Gallo each won two singles matches for Marina (12-6), the Wave League co-champion.

Savas Zamvakellis and Marcus Garland won twice in doubles for the Vikings.

SOFTBALL

Ocean View 19, Katella 3: Ashley Capelouto and Desyree Arizmendi homered for the Seahawks in a Golden West League game on Wednesday on the road.

Ocean View is now 11-10 overall and 5-5 in league.
