High School Roundup: Sage Hill girls’ tennis edges Newport Harbor

Arden Stobart and Kana Byrd swept in singles as the Sage Hill School girls’ tennis team edged Newport Harbor, 10-8, in a nonleague match Thursday at Sage Hill.

It was the seventh year in a row the Lightning had beat the Sailors, all with a score of 10-8, Sage Hill coach Whit Kenerson said.

Sage Hill (2-1) opens Western Athletic Conference play Tuesday, when it hosts Capistrano Valley Christian.

Kendall Solomon and Reilly Bogard swept in doubles for Newport Harbor (2-2), which plays at Laguna Hills on Tuesday in continued nonleague action.

Corona del Mar 13, San Clemente 5: Sienna Brooks, Lauren Jones and Cate Montgomery all swept in singles for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s nonleague road match.

Lena Pham and Shea Tomac won twice at No. 1 doubles for CdM (2-1), which hosts former league rival University on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, JSerra 2: Anabel Kotzakov had a team-leading 14 kills and provided the match-clinching service ace, as the Sailors defeated the Lions 20-25, 25-20, 25-9, 25-27, 15-13 on Thursday in a Sunset League vs. Trinity League showcase match at home.

Emma Fults contributed 11 kills, Quinn Perry had 10 kills, and Gabbi Higgs and Anne O’Brien each provided six kills. Megan Burns also had six aces for Newport Harbor (6-4).

Santa Margarita 3, Huntington Beach 1: Lillian Perkins had a team-high 13 kills, but the Oilers lost to the Eagles 15-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-22 in a Sunset League vs. Trinity League showcase match Thursday at Newport Harbor High School.

Haylee LaFontaine recorded 12 kills, Taylor Ponchak added nine kills, and Sydney Murrey chipped in with eight kills for the Oilers (4-3).
