High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ basketball wins Mariner Mayhem Tournament

Chase Dionio had a team-high 29 points to lead the Newport Harbor High School girls’ basketball team to a 70-63 win over Long Beach Wilson in the final of the Pacifica Mariner Mayhem Tournament on Saturday night.

Kate Bland added 12 points and eight rebounds for Newport Harbor (8-2) off the bench. Aissa Grum had five points, 12 rebounds and four assists, and Emma Fults also had 10 points and six rebounds for the Sailors.

“They’re very consistent,” Newport Harbor coach Jillian Angell said. “They’ve been playing with each other for so long that they kind of know how to work their way out of it, even if they start to get a little crazy there.”

Dionio was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Cydney Jover also made the all-tournament team from Newport Harbor.

“I think the confidence level of this group is really intense,” Dionio said. “We are working really hard, and I think that we’re ready for whoever wants to play us.”

El Toro 42, Edison 35: Adelina Fredrick had nine points to pace Edison on Saturday in the third-place game of the Pacifica Mariner Mayhem Tournament.

Kat Rumsey added six points for Edison (3-6).

Fountain Valley 44, Huntington Beach 34: Audrey Tengan led all scorers with 15 points, as the Barons defeated the Oilers in the third-place game of the Glenn-Norwalk Classic on Saturday.

Margaret Tengan had 11 points, including a trio of three-pointers, for Fountain Valley (6-3). Audrey Tengan was named to the all-tournament team.

Akemi Tanga scored seven points for Huntington Beach (2-6).

Sage Hill 62, Paramount 48: Isabel Gomez had 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and three blocked shots to lead the Lightning on Saturday in a nonleague game on the road.

Emily Eadie added 16 points and 17 rebounds, Kat Righeimer contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Zoie Lamkin scored nine points with three assists for Sage Hill (8-1).

San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea 47, Fountain Valley 42: Audrey Tengan paced the Barons with 14 points in Friday’s game of the Glenn-Norwalk Classic.

Margaret Tengan also had 12 points for Fountain Valley.

Hacienda Heights Los Altos 38, Huntington Beach 32: Akemi Tanga and Makenna Tayenaka each had eight points for the Oilers Friday in a semifinal game of the Glenn-Norwalk Classic.

Long Beach Wilson 38, Edison 30: Adelina Fredrick had a team-high eight points for the Chargers in Friday’s semifinal game of the Mariner Mayhem Tournament.

Bailey Chang also had five points for Edison.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 62, Victorville Victor Valley 51: Sanjay Tewari led the Sea Kings with 17 points, as CdM advanced to the final of the Artesia Winter Classic with Friday’s result.

Hudson Bond had 14 points, Dylan Rogers added 13 points, and Ilan Agranovich chipped in with 11 points for CdM (5-0).

Laguna Beach 66, Portola 37: Jackson Sirianni scored a season-high 38 points for the Breakers in the Mariko Memorial Classic on Friday.

Laguna Beach improved to 4-1 overall.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 20, Goleta Dos Pueblos 7: Ava Knepper recorded a hat trick to lead the Breakers on Saturday in a nonleague match.

Lexi Parness, Kara Carver, Hannah Carver and Carly Rohrer each had two goals for Laguna Beach (3-0).

Laguna Beach 14, San Marcos 8: Charlotte Riches and Ava Houlahan each had four goals to lead the Breakers on Friday.

Hannah Carver and Ava Knepper scored two goals apiece.
