High School Roundup: Edison boys’ basketball tops Laguna Beach

Tyler Hampton had 13 points to lead the Edison High School boys’ basketball team past Laguna Beach 56-40 on Wednesday night in a Surf League opener at home.

Emerson Evans added 11 points for Edison (16-3). Kaz Hampton drained a trio of three-pointers for his nine points, and Dylan Hugues and Quinn Delaney each had seven points for the Chargers.

The Chargers had last played a game on Dec. 30.

“I think it was a little tough,” Emerson said of coming back from the two-week layoff. “We were a little gassed, a little out of shape, but I think it started with defense. Our shots weren’t falling in the beginning, but we turned it up on defense and the defense turned into offense on fastbreaks.”

Kai Gillies had a game-high 17 points for Laguna Beach (10-7).

Corona del Mar 71, Huntington Beach 65: Hudson Bond scored 20 points for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Wave League opener at Huntington Beach High.

George Bruening scored 13 points for CdM (17-1), and Jack Louks added 10.

Brody Thralls had 15 points to lead Huntington Beach (4-14), while Tyler Mangold scored 10.

Estancia 51, Saddleback 41: Lewis Tate scored 20 points to lead the Eagles in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League opener on the road.

Jaedon Hose-Shea added 12 points for Estancia (15-5), which hosts Santa Ana on Friday.

Santiago 76, Los Amigos 38: The Lobos were doubled up by the Cavaliers on Wednesday in a Garden Grove League game at home.

Los Amigos dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in league.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Santiago 47, Los Amigos 4: The host Lobos fell to 2-15 overall and 0-2 in the Garden Grove League following Wednesday’s defeat.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Los Alamitos 4, Corona del Mar 1: The Sea Kings dropped Wednesday’s Surf League opener at home, as CdM (5-3) has taken consecutive losses for the first time this season.

Estancia 1, Saddleback 0: The visiting Eagles earned their third straight win to begin Orange Coast League play on Wednesday afternoon.

David Lopez scored off a corner kick from Alex DeLeon in the 30th minute for Estancia (3-9-1, 3-0). Cesar Pedroza stopped seven shots, including five saves in the second half, to preserve the shutout.

Estancia plays host to Santa Ana (6-3-5, 2-0-1) on Friday at 5 p.m., as the Eagles look to maintain their hold on first place in league.

Huntington Beach 0, Newport Harbor 0: The Oilers and Sailors played to a scoreless draw on Wednesday in a Wave League opener at Huntington Beach High School.

Huntington Beach (9-2-4) remains at home to face Marina on Friday at 5 p.m., while Newport Harbor (5-2-2) will welcome Laguna Beach for a 5 p.m. kickoff at Davidson Field.

Marina 6, Laguna Beach 1: Abner Molina paced the Vikings with two goals in a Wave League opener at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Ryan Patterson, Damiond Mendoza, Adrian Arredondo and Ted Frousiakis each had one goal for Marina (3-8-2).

Laguna Beach dropped to 4-5 overall.

Segerstrom 4, Ocean View 0: The visiting Seahawks dropped to 0-12-1 overall and 0-3 in Golden West League play on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Los Amigos 4, Santiago 2: The Lobos improved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Garden Grove League with Wednesday’s road victory.

WRESTLING

Corona del Mar 72, Laguna Beach 6: The Sea Kings captured the Wave League championship with Wednesday’s win at home.

Corona del Mar, which repeated as league champions, moved its record to 7-1 overall while completing the sweep of the Wave League circuit, which also includes Newport Harbor and Huntington Beach.

Brady Mercer (106 pounds), Angelo Gonzalez (120), Brendan Muse (126), JJ Strapp (138), Luke Villaluz (145), Antonio Aramburu (152) and Eugenio Franco (195) won their matches by fall for the Sea Kings.

Fountain Valley 66, Marina 16: The host Barons earned a win over the Vikings in a Surf League dual meet on Wednesday.

Fountain Valley improved to 2-0 in league dual meets, while Marina is 1-2 in those contests.
