High School Roundup: Estancia girls’ basketball sweeps the Battle for the Bell series

The Estancia High School girls’ basketball team earned a 46-14 win over Costa Mesa at home on Thursday, completing a sweep of its Battle for the Bell rival in the season series.

Mackenzie Sanchez had 13 points, 14 rebounds, eight steals and five assists for Estancia (11-8, 3-3). Leslie Calderon had 12 points, and Elisa Hernandez pulled down 13 rebounds.

The Eagles won both ends of the home-and-home set against the Mustangs for the first time since 2018.

Ly Duong had six points to lead Costa Mesa (3-11, 0-6).

Estancia plays at Saddleback on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., while Costa Mesa will travel to Calvary Chapel for a 5 p.m. tip-off that same day.

Corona del Mar 50, Laguna Beach 17: Makena Tomlinson scored a team-high 14 points for the Sea Kings on Tuesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game on the road.

Dorothy Schwenck added 13 points, and Haley Esquino scored seven points for CdM (12-9).

Kate Cheng’s six points paced Laguna Beach (15-9). Sophie Marriner added four points and 11 rebounds.

Huntington Beach 37, Edison 35: Audrey Nguyen had 14 points to lead the visiting Oilers on Tuesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Huntington Beach improved to 10-11 overall.

Mia Cassel had 21 points and 19 rebounds for Edison (9-16).

Fountain Valley 51, Newport Harbor 40: Audrey Tengan had 16 points to lead the host Barons on Tuesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Hannah Walsh scored 12 points, Margaret Tengan added seven points, and Mary Nguyen chipped in with six points for Fountain Valley (14-5).

Newport Harbor dropped to 16-8 overall.

Los Alamitos 56, Marina 18: Paula Le scored 10 points for the Vikings on Tuesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game at home.

Kylie Fung added eight points for Marina (5-17).

Theresa Fernandez, Sydney Boyd and Kassidy Beach each scored 11 points for Los Alamitos (13-5).

Godinez 34, Ocean View 22: The host Seahawks dropped their third in a row on Tuesday in a Golden West League game.

Ocean View is 12-9 overall and 1-4 in league.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 67, Cerritos Valley Christian 7: The Tritons extended their winning streak to eight games with Tuesday’s nonleague win at home.

Pacifica Christian (16-5) plays at Newport Christian (6-3) in an Academy League game on Thursday.

Sage Hill 68, Claremont Webb 12: Isabel Gomez had a career-high 41 points to go with nine rebounds, five steals and four assists to lead the Lightning in a San Joaquin League game at home on Tuesday.

Megan Shean added seven points, eight rebounds and six steals for Sage Hill (16-8, 4-1). Kiana Hosseinzadeh scored five points.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Ocean View 75, Godinez 43: The Seahawks routed the Grizzlies in Tuesday’s Golden West League game at Ocean View High.

Chico Lopez scored 25 points for Ocean View (13-7, 3-1), which plays at Segerstrom on Wednesday night.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 66, Fairmont Prep 59: Parker Straus had 21 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Tritons in a key San Joaquin League win Tuesday on the road.

Dylan Godfrey scored 15 points and dished out seven assists for Pacifica Christian (11-12, 2-3), which handed Fairmont Prep (13-6, 5-1) its first league loss.

Salim Semaan scored 12 points for the Tritons, ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division 2A.

Pacifica Christian hosts Riverside Notre Dame in a nonleague game Friday night.

Orangewood Academy 72, Sage Hill 58: The Lightning dropped to 11-9 overall and 2-1 in the Academy League following Tuesday’s result at home.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Laguna Beach 2, Corona del Mar 1: The Breakers earned the home win in Tuesday night’s Sunset Conference crossover match.

Laguna Beach (4-7-1) hosts Marina on Thursday.

Ava Frederickson had a goal for CdM (11-5-2), which has lost five straight matches and hosts Huntington Beach in its next match on Thursday. Sydney Walls and Alex Boserup made four saves apiece for the Sea Kings.

Costa Mesa 2, Estancia 0: Brianna Calderon and Kyra Kirsch scored for the Mustangs on Tuesday, as they swept the Battle for the Bell in an Orange Coast League match at Estancia High.

Bryanna Ellis had an assist for league-leading Costa Mesa (8-9-3, 6-0-1). Goalkeepers Layla Cash and Lucero Islas preserved the shutout.

Costa Mesa plays at second-place Calvary Chapel (4-1-1) in a key match Thursday. The teams played to a scoreless tie in their first league meeting Monday.

Estancia (5-12, 3-4) plays at Saddleback on Thursday.

Newport Harbor 3, Edison 0: Sam Wallis had a goal and an assist for the Sailors in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at Newport Harbor High.

Brielle Benedict and Sadie Hoch also scored for Newport Harbor (10-8-4), and Laine Briggs had a pair of assists. Goalkeeper Emily Park made four saves, and Audrey Burns made one save.

The Sailors, who have won five straight matches, resume Wave League play at Fountain Valley on Thursday.

Edison (12-6-2) plays at Los Alamitos in a Surf League match Thursday.

Huntington Beach 3, Fountain Valley 0: Jordan Bailey scored two goals for the Oilers in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at Huntington Beach High.

Brooke Pilkington also scored and Jacey Martinez had a pair of assists for Huntington Beach (10-5-6), which also got an assist from Ashley Fujimori.

The Oilers resume Surf League play at CdM on Thursday, while Fountain Valley (6-9-3) hosts Newport Harbor.

Los Alamitos 3, Marina 1: The Vikings fell to 5-8-2 after dropping Tuesday’s Sunset Conference home crossover match.

Ocean View 3, Godinez 1: The host Seahawks improved to 8-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Golden West League on Tuesday.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 6, Samueli Academy 0: Leila Bahnsen and Logan Bray had two goals apiece for the host Tritons on Tuesday in a nonleague match.

Mia Patterson and Talia Proctor each scored one goal for Pacifica Christian (13-5).

Sage Hill 3, Fairmont Prep 2: The Lightning improved to 7-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the San Joaquin League with Tuesday’s win at home.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Sage Hill 2, Samueli Academy 1: The Lightning picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday in a San Joaquin League match at Centennial Park in Santa Ana.

Sage Hill is now 1-7-3 overall and 1-2-1 in league.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 8, Los Alamitos 7: Ava Knepper scored three goals for the Breakers in Tuesday’s Surf League match at Los Alamitos High.

Ava Houlahan, Lela McCarroll, London Boyd, Charlotte Riches and Cleo Washer added one goal each for Laguna Beach (19-3, 3-2 in league). Goalkeeper Lauren Schneider made 10 saves.

Laguna Beach, ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, beat Los Alamitos (15-5, 2-3) by one goal for the second straight time in league. The Griffins are tied for third in the Division 1 poll.

The Breakers begin play in the three-day Newport Invitational tournament on Thursday, facing Foothill at 2:30 p.m. at Newport Harbor High.
