High School Roundup: Huntington Beach boys’ swimming earns first win over Los Alamitos since 2005

The Huntington Beach High boys’ swim team beat Los Alamitos 110-60 on Thursday in a Sunset Conference crossover meet at Huntington Beach High.

It was the first win over the Griffins since 2005 for the Oilers, who improved to 7-0 this season.

“Today’s win is a reflection of the hard work these kids have put in over the years in order to build this program,” Huntington Beach coach Ryan Camps said in a text message.

Senior Caden Cunningham was a double-event winner for Huntington Beach, touching first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.46 seconds) and the 100 free (47.21). Junior Jayden Leiva won the 200 free in 1:46.97, and sophomore Tas Palcza won the 200 IM in 1:56.10 and the 100 breaststroke in 59.95.

James Luu, Palcza, Hudson Ruth and Cunningham won the 200 medley relay (1:37.22), while Leiva, Dylan Crane, Dat Nguyen and Palcza won the 200 free relay (1:27.90). In the 400 free relay, Cunningham, Kyle Shih, Andrew Bui and Leiva touched first in 3:16.12.

Huntington Beach hosts Marina on Tuesday in a Wave League meet.

GIRLS’ DIVING

Marina High won the Sunset Conference title during competition Thursday at Los Alamitos High.

Lia Borja of Marina won the individual title, followed by Edison’s Delaney Murphy in second place and Marina’s Niamh Hughes in third.

BASEBALL

Huntington Beach 2, Hamilton (Ariz.) 1 (eight innings): Trent Grindlinger’s single drove home Nicholas Dumesnil for the winning run on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the National High School Invitational tournament in North Carolina.

Ben Jacobs pitched six strong innings for the Oilers (14-4), who have won 10 straight games.

Huntington Beach plays St. John’s Country Day School of Florida in the tournament semifinals Friday.

Ocean View 2, Garden Grove 0: Gavin Kells threw five shutout innings for the Seahawks in Thursday’s Golden West League road game.

First-place Ocean View improved to 14-6 overall, and 6-0 in league.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 14, Marina 4: Niels Hoffmann swept in singles for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Sunset Conference crossover match.

Jonathan Hinkel and Kevin Joynt swept in doubles for CdM (17-2), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Marina, ranked No. 4 in Division 2, fell to 12-5.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Edison 15, Newport Harbor 8: Sofia Chock and Gwen Ontiveros both scored four goals for the Chargers in Thursday’s Sunset League match at Edison High.

First-place Edison improved to 8-6 overall, and 4-0 in league. Newport Harbor is 8-7, 1-3 in league.
