High School Roundup: Los Amigos baseball handles Leuzinger in first round

Juan Gutierrez threw a complete game with seven strikeouts, as the Los Amigos High School baseball team defeated visiting Lawndale Leuzinger 17-3 on Friday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.

The top-seeded Lobos built on the success of the regular season, during which they won the Garden Grove League title, the first in program history.

Steven Esteves picked up two hits and three runs batted in for Los Amigos (23-4). Josiah Alvarez had two doubles and two RBIs, and Aaron Ramirez chipped in with two hits and two runs scored. Gutierrez also reached base three times, driving in two runs.

Los Amigos will go on the road to face Big Bear (12-6), which earned an 11-2 win over Helendale Academy of Careers and Exploration in its first-round game.

La Puente Bishop Amat 4, Ocean View 1: The host Seahawks were unable to turn the tables on the Lancers in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs on Friday.

Ocean View (19-9), which shared the Golden West League title with Segerstrom, dropped a regular season meeting with Bishop Amat 9-5 in a tournament on Feb. 17.

Fourth-seeded Huntington Beach (20-8), which had a first-round bye, will host Bishop Amat on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor 7, San Clemente 1: Joey Wright went three for three with a double and three runs batted in to lead the Sailors to their first playoff win since 2010 on Friday in a Division 3 first-round game at home.

Trent Liolios held the Tritons to two hits over six innings to earn the win, striking out 11 batters. He also drove in two runs at the plate. Jack Morris also scored a pair of runs for the Sailors.

Newport Harbor (17-11) will head to Citrus Valley (18-7) for a second-round game on Tuesday. The Blackhawks beat visiting Oak Hills 7-4 in their playoff opener.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 15, Los Angeles Loyola 10: Nicolas Peloso had a hat-trick in the first quarter en route to a team-leading six goals on Saturday in a Division 1 quarterfinal on the road.

Ty Caffarelli had five goals for CdM (17-3), which will play host to top-seeded Mater Dei in the semifinals on Monday.

Lucas Newton added two goals, and Logan Ip and Tyler Brown scored a goal apiece for the Sea Kings.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 9, Canyon 8: The No. 2-seeded Sea Kings came away with a narrow win against the Comanches on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Division 2 playoffs.

Abby Grace had four goals and one assist to lead CdM (14-5). The contest was a rematch of the Division 2 final from last season, which the Sea Kings also won.

Amanda Cord and Megan Schafer scored two goals apiece, and Katie Sullivan also had one goal. Eleanor Spotts made five saves.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 10, Claremont 8: The Sea Kings claimed six sets in doubles to fuel their first-round win in the Open Division playoffs on Friday at home.

The pairings of Max Krykunenko and Logan Friedman, as well as Jonathan Hinkel and Jack Knox, each won two sets apiece.

Niels Hoffmann and Jack Cross each won twice in singles for CdM (20-2), which will play host to Calabasas (19-0) in a semifinal match on Wednesday.

Marina 10, Los Angeles Windward 8: Seniors Peter Liang and Vincent Hoang swept in singles for the visiting Vikings on Friday to advance to the Division 2 quarterfinals.

Bradley Gallo and Trevor Nguyen also swept in doubles for Marina (17-5), the undefeated Wave League champion. The pairing of Jonathan Gertz and Nathan Nguyen won one set.

Marina travels again Monday to take on Goleta Dos Pueblos (17-2), which toppled Temple City 11-7 in its second-round match.
