Lucas Newton recorded three goals and two assists to lead the Corona del Mar High School boys’ lacrosse team to a 9-5 victory over top-seeded Mater Dei on Tuesday in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinal at home.

The Sea Kings pulled off the upset to avenge a regular season loss to the Monarchs on April 2, which was decided by a count of 14-8. Fourth-seeded Corona del Mar (18-3) will face No. 2-seeded Foothill (19-4), a 10-8 winner over St. Margaret’s in its semifinal, in the championship match on Friday at Downey High School at 7:30 p.m.

Logan Ip and Jack Dickson each scored two goals for CdM. Ryan Schafer added a goal and an assist, and Nicolas Peloso also had a goal. Scott Westrick, Oliver Ayala and Peyton Tingley had one assist apiece, and Grant Giuliano made 11 saves for the Sea Kings.

“I am so proud of this group of kids,” CdM coach G.W. Mix remarked via text. “They are a humble and determined bunch of kids who grew up playing together in their local community. It’s so special to see them in these big moments playing so hard for each other. Public school lacrosse is so meaningful. You can’t buy it, and you can’t beat it.”

BASEBALL

Newport Harbor 5, Citrus Valley 1: The Sailors picked up a road win on Tuesday in the second round of the Division 3 playoffs.

Newport Harbor (18-11) returns home to face Downey (14-16) on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Big Bear 7, Los Amigos 4: Maysen Navarro had two hits, including a solo home run, but it wasn’t enough as the top-seeded Lobos fell to the host Bears on Tuesday in the second round of the Division 7 playoffs.

Juan Gutierrez had a double and scored a run for Los Amigos (23-5), which won the Garden Grove League title this season.

Chris Betancourt added two hits, driving in one run and scoring another. Steven Esteves also had a run batted in.

SOFTBALL

Newport Harbor 7, Lompoc 5: Dru Stinson had two hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored to lead the No. 4-seeded Sailors in the second round of the Division 4 playoffs on Tuesday on the road.

Chase Dionio also drove in two runs for Newport Harbor (17-5), which plays at Northridge Heritage Christian (20-8) on Thursday in the quarterfinals. Heritage Christian has allowed one run across its two playoff games against El Monte Arroyo and Ventura Buena.

Olivia Williams added two hits and scored a run for the Sailors.

Fountain Valley 14, Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep 8: The top-seeded Barons continued to ride their high-powered offense in Tuesday’s road game to advance to the Division 5 quarterfinals.

Fountain Valley (22-4-1) plays host to San Marino (15-8), a 6-0 winner over Santa Paula in its second-round game, on Thursday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Goleta Dos Pueblos 10, Marina 8: The visiting Vikings were sunk by the Chargers on Monday in a Division 2 quarterfinal match.

Marina (17-6) went undefeated in winning the Wave League championship this season.
