High School Roundup: Costa Mesa football strikes late for first win

Garrett Richards found Chris Rivera for the go-ahead touchdown in the corner of the end zone with about two minutes left, as the Costa Mesa High football team rallied to defeat host Whittier Pioneer 21-20 in a nonleague game on Friday night.

Costa Mesa (1-1) earned its first win under new head coach Gary Gonzalez. Rivera added an interception return for a score in the first half.

Riley Weinstein also had a long receiving touchdown from Richards, which gave the Mustangs a 14-13 lead heading into halftime.

Costa Mesa will take on Loara (0-2) in its home opener next Friday.

Huntington Beach 26, Fontana Summit 7: Daunte Bell had three total touchdowns, as the Oilers won comfortably in their home opener on Thursday.

Bell found the end zone on the ground twice, and he also found Musashi Ray for a 12-yard touchdown through the air. Vaughn Popp also connected with AJ Vandermade for a touchdown.

Huntington Beach (2-0) will look to extend its winning streak when it visits Long Beach Wilson (0-1) next Thursday.

Corona del Mar 28, Los Gatos 14: David Rasor threw for three touchdowns and added a rushing score, as the Sea Kings picked up the road victory in a nonleague game on Friday night.

Cooper Hoch was on the receiving end of a pair of touchdowns from Rasor. Zach Giuliano also caught a touchdown for CdM (2-0), which travels to play Palos Verdes next Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Dana Hills 28, Laguna Beach 24: Senior running back Christian Guarascio carried the ball 29 times for 264 yards and three touchdowns, leading the visiting Dolphins past the Breakers in a nonleague game on Friday night at Laguna Beach High.

Laguna Beach (0-2) plays host to Northwood (2-0) next Friday.

8-MAN FOOTBALL

Sage Hill 57, Hesperia Christian 30: Steven Karahalios had five total touchdowns (three receiving), as the Lightning used an offensive explosion to open the season with a win on Friday night.

Karahalios also had a rushing score and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Quarterback Carson Green threw for four touchdowns, with one of those going to Danyel Khan.

Aidan Raymer added a pair of rushing touchdowns for Sage Hill.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, Yorba Linda 0: Anabel Kotzakov had a team-leading 16 kills, as the visiting Sailors swept the Mustangs 27-25, 25-15, 25-16 on Friday in a nonleague match.

Laine Briggs and Malia Thorne each had nine kills for Newport Harbor (4-0). Drue Coberly had 20 assists and four digs, and Tegan Glenn added eight assists, seven digs, three kills and three service aces.

Edison 3, Trabuco Hills 0: Summer Witherby led the way for the Chargers with 13 kills, as Edison rolled to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-18 straight-sets victory on Thursday in nonleague action on the road.

Molly McCluskey contributed eight kills for Edison (6-9).

Corona del Mar 3, Long Beach Poly 0: Reese Olson had 12 kills to pace the Sea Kings, who defeated the host Jackrabbits 25-12, 25-14, 26-24 on Thursday in a nonleague match.

Kirsten Dauderman added seven kills and 11 digs for CdM (6-5). Reiley Murphy had nine kills and four aces, and Sofia Bonanno and Hailey Shaw had five kills apiece.

Ocean View 3, Fairmont Prep 1: Brooke Abascal had 12 kills to pace the visiting Seahawks on Thursday in a 27-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-12 win over the Huskies in nonleague play.

Jade Auger dropped in 11 aces, and Liz Espinoza registered four total blocks for Ocean View (1-3).

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Downey Calvary Chapel 0: Ava Loritz had six kills for the Tritons in their 25-10, 25-23, 25-22 nonleague win on Thursday at home.

Savannah Parker added six aces, and Colleen O’Callaghan had four kills for Pacifica Christian (3-1).

Costa Mesa 3, Godinez 0: The Mustangs improved to 3-1 on the season with a 25-20, 25-9, 24-26, 25-14 win over the Grizzlies on Thursday in a nonleague match.

Estancia 3, Garden Grove Santiago 0: The visiting Eagles swept the Cavaliers 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 to run their record to 5-0 on the season on Thursday.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 14, Beckman 4: The doubles teams of Lauren Jones and Cate Montgomery, as well as Sasha Briggs and Sasha Fellner, swept their matches to lead the Sea Kings on Thursday in a nonleague contest.

Sophia Andrei-Birca also ran the table in singles for CdM (1-0).

GIRLS’ GOLF

Laguna Beach 247, Estancia 262: The host Breakers defeated the Eagles on Thursday in a nonleague match at Ben Brown’s Golf Course in Laguna Beach.

Danielle Breitwieser carded a 10-over-par 42 to lead Estancia (0-2).

FIELD HOCKEY

Edison 4, West Hills Chaminade 0: Sydney Truong, Madison Kruis, McKenna Prijatel and Katie Wright each scored a goal for the host Chargers in their season opener on Friday.
