High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ lacrosse to play in semis on Saturday

Newport Harbor 9, Trabuco Hills 3

MISSION VIEJO — Heather Roberts netted a free-position goal to break an 8-8 tie and propel the Sailors in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs on Thursday at Trabuco Hills.

Sarah Farley, Adena Rothbard and Lysie Kenney scored two goals apiece and Jade Retting had nine saves for the Sailors, who move on to play against Foothill in the semifinals at Portola High School in Irvine Saturday at 12:45 p.m.

Farley added two assists, two draw controls, four ground balls, two interceptions and two forced turnovers.

Katie Hendrix and Caroline Farley also had goals for the Tars (13-5).

Mater Dei 11, Corona del Mar 8

SANTA ANA — Jensen Coop had three goals to lead the visiting Sea Kings in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs on Thursday.

Kennedy Mulvaney had two goals and two assists for the Sea Kings, who finish the season 13-7.

Ellery Amdor also had two goals for CdM.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 5, University 0

Alex Shadid earned the pitching win and went two for three with a run batted in for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League win on Friday.

Dylan Heckle picked up the save.JT Schwartz (double, two RBIs), Nolan Dunn (two hits) and Reece Berger (two hits, RBI) also contributed for the first-place Sea Kings, who play host to Northwood on Tuesday, senior day.

Newport Harbor 5, Fountain Valley 1

Cameron Mahaffy went two for three with two RBIs for the Sailors in the Sunset League game on Friday.

Mat Weiss earned the win, giving up just four hits and no earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Max Crabbe went one for one with one RBI.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Academy League finals

LA PALMA — Sage Hill won its third straight Academy League title Thursday at Kennedy High.

Senior Taras Polakoff and sophomore Jason Schreiber shared the league MVP award for the Lightning.

The Sage Hill 200 medley relay team of Ethan Vovan, Schreiber, Polakoff and Zane Drobenko lowered their league and school record with a 1:41.12. The 400 free relay team with the same four swimmers set a school record in 4:23.65, including a leadoff leg by Polakoff of 48.78 that was also a school record.

Individually, Polakoff swam a 53.39 in the backstroke that was a school and league record, and he also won the butterfly (53.19). Schreiber set the league record and lowered his school record by winning the 200 IM in 1:55.31, and also won the breaststroke in 58.85 to lower his school record.

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Corona del Mar finished third in league, behind league champion Northwood and University, at finals Friday at Woollett Aquatics Center.

Ethan Archer won the 100-yard backstroke in 49.89 and he was third in the 200 free in 1:43.82. CdM’s Tanner Pulice finished second in the 200 IM, in 1:54.78, and he was fourth in the 100 fly (52.07).

Ryan Schildwachter won the 100 breast in 56.75 for the Sea Kings.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Corona del Mar finished fourth in league at finals Friday at Woollett Aquatics Center.

Senior Nicole Lin was second in the 50 free in 23.91 seconds, and she also placed fifth in the 100 breast in 1:06.39.

Senior Jaleh Moaddeli earned a pair of top-five finishes in the 200 free (fifth, 1:59.55) and the 500 free (fourth, 5:24.21).

SOFTBALL

Los Alamitos 4, Edison 1

Jenna Bloom turned in one of the best starts this year in a Sunset League game against the Griffins (23-3, 9-0), allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out four in six innings.

The Chargers (13-9, 4-5) could not score the runs to match, managing a single run in the fifth inning.

Hannah Horton, Geo Ligget, and Riley Wester had hits for Edison.

Ryan Denhart struck out seven in earning the win for the Griffins, and Andrea Gonzalez had two RBIs.

Edison can force a third-place league playoff game with a win against Marina next Tuesday.

Fountain Valley 8, Newport Harbor 0: The Barons (14-15, 3-6) scored four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to break the game open.

Stephanie Tsai, Madeline Domingo, Madison Primrose, JJ Sheppard, and Lauren Wilson had multi-hit games for Fountain Valley.

Jackie Rodriguez struck out four in five innings to get the win.

Leah Freeman and Diana Surber had the hits for the Sailors (6-19, 0-9).

Corona del Mar 5, University 1

Amerys Barshtak, Lauren Oberreiter, and Kira Delgadillo had doubles as the Sea Kings (12-11, 4-4) completed the sweep of the Trojans (3-13, 0-7) in Pacific Coast League action.

Raine Finley, Sujata Tewari, and Sophia Rhee had an RBI apiece.

Audrey Tumbarello allowed three hits and struck out eight in a complete game for CdM.

Rancho Alamitos 7, Los Amigos 3

The Vaqueros swept the season series with the Lobos to finish at 15-8 overall, 4-6 in the Golden West League.

Rancho Alamitos will be idle, while the winner of Friday’s game between La Quinta (12-9, 3-6) and Los Amigos (10-14, 3-6) will join the Vaqueros in a tie for the league’s third seed and its final automatic playoff berth.

Los Amigos athletic director Chris Sandro indicated that the first tiebreaker in the case of a tie is head-to-head competition, per the league guidelines. As a result of the Rancho Alamitos sweep, the Lobos will not be afforded an opportunity to force an additional league game in the event of a win for Los Amigos on Friday.
