High school roundup: Marina boys’ basketball earns first CIF playoff win since 2009

Senior forward Jakob Alamudun scored 23 points on Wednesday, leading the Marina High boys’ basketball team to a 72-50 rout at La Quinta, marking the Vikings’ first CIF Southern Section playoff win since the 2008-09 season.

Marina (16-11) is at home against No. 4-seeded Murrieta Mesa (22-8) in a Division 3A second-round game at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Vikings, an at-large entry, finished fourth in the Sunset League, and the Rams were third in the Southwestern League.

Walnut 48, Newport Harbor 39: Senior guard Zack Swies had 14 points for the host Sailors, who were upset in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2A playoffs on Wednesday.

The Sailors’ 39 points were their lowest since the 2015-16 season.

Juniors Sam Barela and Dayne Chalmers each had six points for Newport Harbor (21-7), which shared the Sunset League title with Edison.

Walnut (19-9), the fourth-place team from the Hacienda League, outscored the Sailors 16-7 in the second quarter to take a 27-19 lead at halftime.

Walnut hosts Trabuco Hills (21-7) in the second round on Friday at 7 p.m.

Laguna Beach 63, Corona Santiago 47: Senior guard Blake Burzell finished with 20 points for the No. 2-seeded Breakers in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs at home on Wednesday.

Grady Morgan had 18 points and Owen McMurray added 11 for Orange Coast League champion Laguna Beach (26-3).

The Breakers host Twentynine Palms (21-8), which shared the De Anza League title, on Friday at 7 p.m.

El Monte Arroyo 49, Estancia 35: Senior Alex Hendricks had 11 points for the Eagles in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5AAA playoffs on the road Wednesday.

Estancia ended the season with a 16-11 record.

Arroyo (18-9) plays at No. 3-seeded Fairmont Prep (21-5) in the second round on Friday at 7 p.m.

San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea 70, Sage Hill 60: The season ended for the Lightning on the road in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4A playoffs on Wednesday.

Sage Hill finished 10-17.

Mary Star of the Sea (23-5), the No. 2 seed, plays at Phelan Serrano in the second round on Friday at 7 p.m.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Sage Hill 4, Pasadena Marshall 3: Senior Chase Munger scored three goals to lead the host Lightning in the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs on Wednesday.

Sallar Tahbaz added a goal for Sage Hill (9-8-1), which plays at No. 3-seeded Oxnard Santa Clara (13-1-2) in the first round on Friday.

Kennedy 1, Los Amigos 0: The Lobos’ season ended at home in the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs on Wednesday.

Los Amigos finished 11-7-3.

Kennedy (9-5-6) plays at Lynwood Firebaugh (6-6-1) in the first round on Friday at 5 p.m.
