Lili Akin scored with a second to go in overtime and the Santa Barbara San Marcos High girls’ water polo team stunned defending champion Laguna Beach 8-7 in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal game Thursday at Newport Harbor High.

Second-seeded Laguna Beach (21-3) was going for its fourth Division 1 title in five years and had beaten San Marcos 10-3 in a nonleague match Feb. 9 at Goleta Dos Pueblos High.

“They really came to play,” Laguna Beach coach Ethan Damato said of San Marcos after Thursday’s game. “They were really physical, and they had a lot of energy today. They played really well on the defensive end, and they shot the ball well. You need to shoot the ball well against [goalkeeper] Thea [Walsh] and our defense, and hat’s off to them, they did that today.”
