High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ soccer edges Laguna Beach in Wave League opener

Reese Bodas and Skylynn Rodriguez scored goals as the Newport Harbor High girls’ soccer team beat visiting Laguna Beach 2-1 in Thursday’s Wave League opener.

Kenna Robar and Sadie Pitchess had assists for Newport Harbor, which improved to 12-2-5 overall and plays at Fountain Valley on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Laguna Beach (2-9-3) hosts Marina on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Los Alamitos 1, Huntington Beach 0: The Oilers were blanked on the road Thursday in their Surf League opener.

Huntington Beach (11-7-4) hosts Edison on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Costa Mesa 19, Orange 3: Taiuta Uiagalelei scored six goals for the Mustangs in Thursday’s Orange Coast League road game.

Sofia Rice added four goals for Costa Mesa (7-6, 2-0 in league). The Mustangs host JSerra on Monday at 3 p.m.

Huntington Beach 10, La Canada 6: The Oilers prevailed in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions play-in game Thursday at Santa Barbara High.

Huntington Beach (8-4) plays No. 3-seeded Orange Lutheran in the first round of the tournament Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Santa Barbara.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Capistrano Valley Christian 67, Pacifica Christian Orange County 56: Recent St. Mary’s College commit Judah Brown scored 21 points for the Tritons in Thursday’s San Joaquin League road game.

Josh Sims scored 14 points for Pacifica Christian (13-6, 0-2 in league), and Houston Mallette added 12.

Pacifica Christian plays at Saddleback Valley Christian on Saturday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 46, Saddleback 45: Sophomore power forward Tarah Harmon had a team-high 25 points to lead the host Mustangs on Thursday in an Orange Coast League game.

Senior small forward Katie Belmontes added 11 points for the Mustangs (9-12, 4-0 in league).

Costa Mesa will remain at home to face Santa Ana on Tuesday, when the Mustangs look to go undefeated through the first half of league.

Newport Harbor 45, Laguna Beach 24: Willa Rath had 19 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots to lead the host Sailors in Thursday’s Wave League opener.

Chloe Swanson added 13 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, while Emma Fults also pulled down 12 rebounds for Newport Harbor (11-12).

Laguna Beach is 16-6.

Corona del Mar 61, Edison 32: Tatiana Bruening had 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead the visiting Sea Kings in Thursday’s Surf League opener.

Alara Ersu added 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Samantha Uehara chipped in with 10 points and five assists for CdM (14-9).

Edison dropped to 10-10.
