One day after Newport Harbor High played its first CIF Southern Section baseball playoff game in 20 years, four players on Wednesday were dismissed from the team for unspecified reasons, said a source close to the program.

The source, who asked for anonymity, said first-year Newport Harbor coach Patrick Murphy briefed the team of the situation before Wednesday’s practice. Two of the four players were starters, the source said.

The Sailors (17-10) travel to Adolfo Camarillo (22-4) for a Division I first-round game Thursday at 3:15 p.m. Newport Harbor advanced after beating Corona Roosevelt, 3-2, in a home wild-card game Tuesday.

The names of the players and the reason for their removal could not be confirmed through school officials.

Dave Martinez, Newport Harbor’s vice principal, declined to comment on the incident.
