Slammers boys stay perfect

Corona del Mar High standouts Jack McBean and Mason Case each scored a goal as the Newport Beach-based Slammers FC under-16 boys’ team beat the Ohio Blast FC, 2-0, Thursday, helping the Slammers improve to 2-0 at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Overland Park, Kan.

The Slammers, coached by CdM boys’ soccer coach George Larsen, sit alone atop the standings with six points and a goal differential of three.

Newport Beach plays its third match today against RSL Florida 93 at 10 a.m. A victory guarantees the Slammers a berth into Sunday’s championship match, which would be the team’s first title appearance at the national tournament under Larsen.

Larsen’s other Slammers team in the tournament, under-17 girls, aren’t doing so well.

Newport Beach lost to the Michigan Hawks 93, 3-2. The girls have started with two losses and their third appearance in the past four years at the tournament might be their worst finish. In the previous two trips, the Slammers finished third and second.

The girls play their final game today against the Syosset Sting 92 Elite of New York at 6 a.m.

Chin shoots 68

UC Irvine men’s golf alum John Chin shot a three-under-par 68 in the first round of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio, Thursday.

Chin, a 2010 All-American and Palmer Cup competitor, had an eagle, two birdies and one bogey in Thursday’s round to sit in 13th place. Jonathan Kaye is the first-round leader after an 8-under 63.

Chin, a three-time Big West Conference Golfer of the Year, tees off in the second round today at 5:50 a.m. (PT) on the 10th hole.
