Newport through to semis

HONOLULU — The Newport Harbor High girls’ volleyball team has advanced to the semifinals in the Ann Kang Invitational after winning a pair of matches Friday at Iolani School.

Newport defeated Kahuku, 25-21, 25-20, and Kamehameha of Maui, 25-17, 25-20. The Sailors had another match against Los Alamitos late Friday night but were already assured of making the semifinals.

Alex Holbrook had six kills, and Maddy Brown and Kasey Thompson five each against Kahuku. Cinnamon Sary dished out 11 assists and had four digs, and Hunter Jennings had three digs.

Holbrook also had six kills against Kamehameha, while Sarah Buckingham and Brown each had five. Sary had four kills and 21 assists, and Tabitha Goff added four digs.

Newport’s opponent in the semifinals depended on how its match against Los Al went.
