Chargers win in dramatic fashion

Brent Bazzell scored in sudden-death overtime to lift the Edison High boys’ water polo team to a 10-9 win over Fountain Valley and the championship of the inaugural Newport Rib Co. Classic at Costa Mesa High’s new pool Saturday.

Bazzell scored five goals. His game-winning goal came with some controversy, said Costa Mesa Coach Justin Taylor. It was hard to tell if the goal went in, he said. Bazzell’s shot, from about five meters out, hit off the left bar, bounced off the right bar and apparently floated just inside the cage.

“It wasn’t a clear goal, but [the officials] called it in,” Taylor said.

In addition to winning the 16-team Costa Mesa tournament, the Chargers were treated to a free dinner catered by Newport Rib Co., Taylor said.
