The 2010-11 season game came to an end Wednesday for the Laguna Beach girls’ soccer team, which will head into the offseason on a winning note thanks to a 1-0 Orange Coast League victory at Saddleback.

On Monday, Marina Paul scored twice as the Breakers played Costa Mesa to a 2-2 tie in the final home game for the Laguna seniors.

The Laguna boys’ team also played earlier in the week and battled visiting Costa Mesa to a scoreless tie Tuesday at Guyer Field in the final home game of the season for the Breakers.

“The team showed a lot of character to put on a good display after coming off a disappointing defeat last week,” Laguna boys’ Coach Dan Richards said. “We felt we had the better of the opportunities, which included hitting the cross bar and having a shot saved off the line. Our defense looked very strong throughout the game and limited Costa Mesa to only speculative efforts from long range.

“It was great to see so many people come and support the team for this final league home game of the season. Seeing so many people in attendance for the game was great for all the players, especially the seniors who truly appreciated the support.”

In a league game played Feb. 4, the Laguna boys lost, 6-2, to Godinez at Centennial Park in Santa Ana. Reece Barton and Max Cano scored for the Breakers, Barton on a long-range shot toward the end of the first half and Cano scored on a controlled play after halftime.

“Godinez was a class act and thoroughly deserved the win,” Richards said. “I would like to congratulate all of their players and coaching staff for winning the Orange Coast League title and wish them well in the playoffs.”

Laguna ended league and regular season play Thursday against Saddleback. The score wasn’t available at press time.
