CORONA — It’s been more than a decade since Newport Harbor High has had a CIF champion in wrestling. But senior Bradley Beaudette ended the drought Saturday at Roosevelt High.

Beaudette (32-9) won the 189-pound weight class championship at the CIF Southern Section Inland Division tournament. He became the first CIF champion in Dominic Bulone’s 12 years as Newport Harbor coach.

Beaudette, the Sunset League champion, beat Jordan Bixler of Redlands East Valley, 5-0, in the title match.

“It was awesome,” Beaudette said of becoming a CIF champ. “Greatest feeling in the world, just to be on top of the podium.”

Beaudette, who went 4-0 in the two-day tournament, edged Raymond Sanchez of A.B. Miller, 4-3, in the semifinals.

“He was really aggressive and confident the whole weekend,” Bulone said of Beaudette. “Even when he got a little bit of a lead he didn’t sit back. He just kept going.”

Beaudette had beaten Sanchez, 10-1, earlier in the season. He had never wrestled Bixler before Saturday.

“I was a little nervous in the beginning, but I was really determined to win it,” Beaudette said of his thoughts before the final. “I wanted it really bad.”

Beaudette advances to the CIF Masters Meet, which begins Friday at Temecula Valley High. It is the qualifying meet for the CIF State Championships. The top nine wrestlers in each weight class advance to the CIF state meet March 4-5 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

Newport Harbor senior Ryan Cerrato, in the 171-pound weight class, just missed on his chance to advance by one spot. He finished sixth after losing three matches Saturday. He lost in the semifinals, 4-2, to Norwalk’s Christian Millian, who went on to win the CIF title.

Cerrato then lost in the consolation semifinal, 9-7, to David Browning of Corona. Cerrato lost, 6-4, to Edison’s Josh Peth in overtime of the fifth-place match to end the tournament. Cerrato had beaten Peth, 6-2, in the quarterfinals Friday.

Jesus Sotelo also wrestled for the Sailors in 130s. He lost in the first round of consolation Saturday morning.
