Edison dominates Millikan Relays

The Edison High girls' swim team won five of seven relays and set three records Saturday in winning its division at the Millikan Relays at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.

The 4 by 100 individual medley team (senior Sarah Moss, sophomore Kylie Boyce, freshman Devin Newton, junior Ellie Morrissey) set a record in the event at 3 minutes 54.87 seconds, winning by a half-pool length. The 4 by 50 breaststroke team (senior Alli Gillespie, Newton, Moss, Boyce) swam a record time of 2:01.06. The 4 by 100 free relay team (Gillespie, 52.21; senior Nicole Boyce, 53.49:, junior Alys Williams, 52.62; Morrissey, 50.46) not only set a meet record but also turned in an automatic All-America time.

The Chargers' 200 medley relay team (Morrissey, Kylie Boyce, junior Abby Oshiro, Williams) went 1:46.87 to earn an automatic All-America time and recorded the fifth-fastest time in meet history. The 6 by 50 free team (Gillespie, Nicole Boyce, senior Harley Owens, Oshiro, senior Haley Kunert, senior Tori Smith) set the third-fastest time (2:27.73) in meet history.

"Our girls came into the prelims on Thursday very focused and that led to some very fast times," Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. "Saturday night however was at an even higher level in terms of fast times. We believed they had chances at the IM and [breaststroke] records, but to think we had a chance at setting the record in the 400 free was a long shot."

Edison also had set the previous meet record in the 4 by 100 free relay two years ago.

"As we have seen in the past, our varsity water polo players are making huge contributions to the success of this team," Riley said. "Williams, Oshiro and Kunert all had outstanding swims."
