College Roundup: UCI blanks Pacific

STOCKTON — Senior Drew Hillman homered and drove in four runs and junior Matt Summers threw seven strong innings to pace the visiting Anteaters Friday in the opener of a three-game Big West Conference series.

Summers allowed six hits and struck out seven to improve to 5-2.

Hillman launched a three-run homer in the eighth and also scored three runs and stole a base.

Senior Jon Hurst homered and went three for five for the winners (22-8, 5-2 in conference), ranked No. 17 in the USA Today/ESPN poll.

Junior second baseman Tommy Reyes was two for four with two RBIs, while junior Christian Ramirez was two for five with two RBIs, and senior Brian Hernandez was two for four for UCI.

Sophomore Kyle Hooper and freshman Phil Ferragamo each pitched a scoreless relief inning to complete the shutout.

WALNUT — UC Irvine junior Nick Jennings was fifth in the men’s pole vault with a clearance of 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches Friday.

Senior Napoleon Greene was 19th in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.57 seconds, senior Matt Lahti was 20th in the hammer throw (179 feet, 11 inches) and junior Chris Carson was 15th in the 100 in 10.96 to highlight other UCI men’s performers.

Sophomore Ericka Nowell was 23rd in the women’s 400 in 1:02.04 and junior Amber Middleton was 24th in the 100 hurdles in 14.28 to highlight UCI women.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Orange Empire Conference Qualifier

CYPRESS — Anna Walinowicz of Orange Coast College won a singles quarterfinal match and combined with Lianne Wheelock to win in the doubles quarterfinals Friday to advance to the Southern California Regionals, May 5-7, at Grossmont College.

Walinowicz topped Melanie Abella of Fullerton, 6-2, 6-4, in singles.

The OCC duo defeated Tina Vuong and Natalie Loaria from Irvine Valley, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in doubles after posting a 6-2, 6-0 win in the round of 16.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

NAIA Invitational

RIVERSIDE — Vanguard lost a pair of games Friday, falling to Azusa Pacific, 13-7, then dropping a 13-3 verdict to Concordia.

Lindsay McCance had two goals in each game for Vanguard, for which Cara Deckert had three goals against APU.
