College Roundup: Vanguard splits with top-ranked Cal Baptist

COSTA MESA — Kaysie Flasck drove in three runs with a double in the fifth inning to help Vanguard earn a split with a 3-2 Golden State Athletic Conference win over Cal Baptist, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, Tuesday.

The Lancers won the first game, 5-0, when Vanguard (22-26, 3-15 in conference) had two hits. The Lions had three hits in the nightcap, when pitcher Stacie Salazar struck out five and walked five in her five-hitter.

Cal Baptist is 53-3, 16-2 in conference.

Big West Conference Championships

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — UC Irvine finished fourth at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club.

UCI had two players in the top 10 led by junior Lalita Patipaksiri who was tied for fourth with a three-round total of 219 (72-74-73), her best finish of the year. Sophomore Michelle Park was ninth with a score of 225 (74-80-71). It is the fourth top-10 finish for both Patipaksiri and Park this season.

UC Irvine was fourth with a 54-hole total of 901 (297-304-300). UC Davis won its second straight title with a three-day total of 867. Long Beach State finished second with a score of 885 and was followed by Cal Poly (895) in third. Rounding out the seven-team field is UC Riverside (922), Cal State Northridge (926) and Cal State Fullerton (947). UC Davis’ Alice Kim earned medalist honors after carding a score of 207 (66-67-74), a new Big West women’s golf championship record.

Freshman Ronnie Valerio was tied for 13th at 227 (73-75-79), while senior Patty Chawalitmetha was tied for 16th with a three-day score of 230 (78-75-77) and freshman Taryn Yee was tied for 32nd at 243 (82-81-80).

VENTURA — Jesse Chen and Gregory Villacana won at No. 3 doubles for the Pirates in the Southern California Regional quarterfinals Tuesday.

OCC was overpowered in singles, winning just 17 games.
