Boras bros. drafted

The Boras brothers, Trent and Shane, highlighted a handful of local players who were selected on the final day of the 2011 Major League First-Year Player Draft.

They are the sons of Scott Boras, the Newport Beach-based super sports agent known for his tough negotiating tactics.

Trent Boras, the younger brother, led the way Wednesday. The JSerra senior third baseman, a Newport Coast resident, was taken No. 911, in the 30th round by the Milwaukee Brewers.

The elder brother, Shane Boras, a second baseman who redshirted at USC this past season, was picked No. 1,186 in the 39th round by the Oakland A's.

Calvin Drummond, who was on the Orange Coast College 2009 state championship team, was taken in the 34th round, No. 1,027 overall, by the Washington Nationals.

Drummond was a redshirt sophomore at the University of San Diego. He notched a team-best 3.29 earned-run average, while posting a 3-4 record in 76 2/3 innings of work. Drummond also recorded 55 strikeouts.

While at OCC, Drummond went 9-5 with a 4.60 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 86 innings of work.

UC Irvine shortstop D.J. Crumlich was the 38th round selection, No. 1,142, of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was named to the All-Big West Conference second team and he was a Brooks Wallace Award nominee. He is hitting .293 with one home run and 27 runs batted in. Crumlich leads UCI with 14 doubles and tops the Big West with 50 runs scored. Crumlich, the Anteaters' leadoff hitter, had five hits and two RBIs in the three games last weekend at the Los Angeles Regional, earning a spot on the all-regional team.

UCI junior infielder Jordan Leyland rounded out the locals selected, as he was taken by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 44th round, No. 1,350. The first baseman/designated hitter is batting .294 and is second in home runs with four and RBIs with 42. At the Los Angeles Regional, Leyland drove in six RBIs to lead the team. He recorded a home run, three runs scored, and a pivotal double in the ninth inning against UCLA to tie the game as UCI eventually eliminated the Bruins.

UCI plays at the University of Virginia a NCAA super regional that starts Saturday.
