Sectionals prove tough for locals

Through mid-week, one local Little League All-Star team — Ocean View’s Majors All-Stars — was in the hunt for a California Section 10 tournament championship. Four other local teams, Ocean View’s 10/11 and 9-10 All-Stars, Huntington Valley’s Junior All-Stars and Robinwood’s Senior All-Stars, saw their postseason runs come to an end earlier this week.

Majors All-Stars

Ocean View, which went undefeated to win the District 62 championship on July 6, suffered its first postseason loss Tuesday when Rancho Mission Viejo (District 68) scored a 6-5 victory in Section 10 tournament action at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Rancho Mission Viejo staved off elimination with the win and set up a championship game final Wednesday night. The score wasn’t available at press time.

Ocean View started the tournament Saturday with a 5-4 win over Aliso Viejo (District 55). On Sunday, Ocean View scored another one-run victory, 2-1 over Rancho Mission Viejo.

9/10 All-Stars

Ocean View went 1-2 in the Section 10 tournament and was eliminated Monday following a 9-2 loss to Lake Forest (District 55) at Hare School Park in Garden Grove.

Ocean View lost twice to Lake Forest, which toppled the locals, 10-0, in an opening game Saturday. Ocean View recovered an went on to take a 10-4 game from Anaheim (District 46) in elimination play Sunday.

10/11 All-Stars

Ocean View’s run in the Section 10 tournament came to an end Tuesday at Lincoln Elementary School in Corona del Mar following a 7-4 loss to Rancho Mission Viejo (District 68), which went undefeated to win the championship.

In a tournament opener Saturday, Ocean View suffered a 10-2 loss to Aliso Viejo (District 55). Ocean View stayed alive in the tourney Sunday by eliminating West Garden Grove (District 46), 7-1. On Monday (), the locals evened things against Aliso Viejo by scoring a 13-5 victory in an elimination game that sent Aliso Viejo home.

“I couldn’t ask for a better group of kids,” Ocean View Manager Steven Blokdyk said. “These boys truly understand the concept of being a team and had each other’s backs the entire tournament. To be one of the two Orange County teams remaining, playing in the championship game of Sectionals, is a real accomplishment. I reminded our team that we are still District 62 champs.”

Junior All-Stars

Huntington Valley dropped its first two games in Section 10 tournament action at San Juan Sports Park in San Juan Capistrano. First, Huntington Valley fell, 14-0, Saturday to San Clemente (District 68), then was eliminated Sunday after a 12-2 loss to Aliso Viejo (District 55).

Senior All-Stars

Robinwood reached the championship series but was denied the title by North Anaheim (District 46), which scored a 17-2 win Tuesday to wrap up the Section 10 title at San Juan Sports Park in San Juan Capistrano. North Anaheim advances to the Sub-Division tournament Saturday at Riverside.

Robinwood went 2-2 in the tournament. The locals beat San Juan Capistrano/Ladera Ranch (District 68), 10-4, in an opener Saturday, lost Sunday to North Anaheim (10-0) and eliminated SJC/Ladera Ranch Monday by an 11-7 score.

Earlier, Robinwood won the Little League District 62 title July 11 by defeating Seaview, 15-2. Goodman, a sophomore at Ocean View High, had seven strikeouts and threw a two-hitter.
