IRVINE — Trent Baxter notched five goals to lead 10 Anteaters who scored in the season opener Saturday.

Mitch Wise, Sam Figueroa, Alan Robertson and Kyle Kittlitz added four goals each for the No. 6-ranked Anteaters.

NEWARK, Del. — UC Irvine pushed No. 14-ranked Northern Iowa to five sets and then fell in a sweep to No. 25-ranked Florida State Saturday.

Shaina Olsen recorded 16 kills and Shannon Fleming added 10 for UCI, but Northern Iowa won, 21-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9.

Northern Iowa improved to 6-0. UCI's Kristin Winkler had a match-high 23 digs.

Florida State won, 25-10, 25-23, 25-11. Olsen led with nine kills for UCI (3-3).

Anteaters setter Mary Carls had 63 assists in the two matches.


Crowne Plaza Labor Day Festival

COSTA MESA — Vanguard swept Menlo and Holy Names to close out the festival at 4-0 and improved 8-3 on the season.

The Lions ended with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-21 win over Menlo. Jamie Heenan led the way with 14 kills.

Heenan had 11 kills and KaUwila Lavea had eight kills to help Vanguard to a 26-24, 25-10, 25-11 win against Holy Names.



Vanguard 1, Pomona Pitzer 0

COSTA MESA — Gabriela Valles scored on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute for the Lions in the nonconference season opener Saturday.

Lauren Terry had four saves for Vanguard, which outshot Pomona Pitzer, 12-6.



Vanguard 2, Whittier 0

COSTA MESA — Kyle O'Brien and Jack Plummer scored a goal each in the first half for the Lions in the nonconference game Saturday.

Plummer's goal was unassisted in the second minute. William Pellow assisted O'Brien's goal in the15th minute.

Cody Adams had two saves for Vanguard (2-2).
