Golden West drops third straight contest

The Golden West College football team saw its record fall to 2-3 Saturday following a 21-14 loss to L.A. Harbor at Orange Coast College's LeBard Stadium. The Rustlers took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on a 75-yard touchdown run by Michael Pierre. That score stood at halftime, but Harbor (4-1) erupted for 21 third-quarter points to go in front for good.

The Rustlers scored their final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a nine-yard scoring pass from Raymond Huizar to Ryan Watson. Pierre rushed for 149 yards on 21 carriers and Huizar was 14 of 32 for 158 yards with two interceptions.

Golden West, which has dropped three straight games, is idle this week and starts Central East Conference play Oct. 13 hosting Santa Ana College at 7 p.m. at OCC.


Former Oiler volleyball player honored

University of Alaska Anchorage women's volleyball player Kimya Jafroudi, who was an all-league player at Huntington Beach High and two-time all-conference at Orange Coast College, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's volleyball Player of the Week on Monday.

A 5-foot-7 junior setter, Jafroudi averaged 11.29 assists in seven sets during the Seawolves' wins last week over 15th-ranked Seattle Pacific and Montana St. Jafroudi had a career-high 15 digs against Seattle Pacific and three aces against Montana St as Alaska Anchorage ran its winning streak to six and was tied for first in the GNAC.


NJB hoops accepting registration

National Junior Basketball is accepting registration for the Huntington Beach Winter League. Player skill evaluations are Oct. 16 at the Huntington Beach High gym at the following times: 9-10 a.m. (Division 3, grades 3/4); 10-11 a.m. (Division 2, grades 5/6); 11 a.m.-noon (Division 1, grades 7/8); noon-1 p.m. (make-up evaluations). Fountain Valley LL registration underway

Water polo registration open

Huntington Beach Water Polo Club is taking registration for its Fall 2011 Water Polo Club Session. Sign ups are open to beginners and advanced players in the following divisions: 10-and-under coed team, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U boys' teams, and 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U girls' teams.

Marina baseball golf tourney is Oct. 30

The Marina High baseball program is running the Marina Baseball Golf Tournament on Oct. 30 at Meadowlark Golf Course, 16782 Graham St., Huntington Beach. The big event includes golfing, a raffle and live and silent auctions.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. followed by an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. Dinner festivities begin at 5 p.m. The cost is $125 per player (entry fee) and $40 for the dinner/auction and raffle only. Sponsorships ($500, $1,000) also are available.
