High School Roundup: Mustangs win Lil’ Pickle Sandwich Showdown

COSTA MESA — James Lewis scored on a penalty shot midway through sudden-death overtime to lead the Mustangs to the championship in the Lil’ Pickle Sandwich Showdown.

Costa Mesa (15-3) went 4-0 in the nine-team tournament and received free sandwich vouchers after edging Pacifica.

Wyatt Ferris drew the penalty to set up Lewis’ heroics. Goalie Mitchell Grandia also came up big for the Mustangs with 17 saves.

Costa Mesa also hosted the Newport Rib Company Classic. Edison won the tournament for the second straight year, this time beating University, 9-8, in the title game. After the win, the Chargers received a catered dinner by Newport Rib Company on the pool deck.

Lil’ Pickle Sandwich Showdown

COSTA MESA — Estancia lost a pair of consolation bracket games Saturday. Paul Sugano-Dyson had three goals as the Eagles were edged by Kennedy, 9-8. Jacob Sperling and Brooks Watkins each scored twice as Estancia lost to Saddleback, 14-6.

Estancia (5-11) plays host to Sage Hill on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
