High School Roundup: Newport clinches league title


Newport Harbor 15, Los Alamitos 3

LOS ALAMITOS — Natalie Cernius swept at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4, 6-0, to help the Sailors clinch the Sunset League title outright Tuesday.

Christina Young and Robin Young swept at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-1, 6-2, while Mindy Wheeler and Megan Bathen swept at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0, for Newport Harbor (14-1, 8-0 in league), which plays host to Huntington Beach Thursday.


Sage Hill 18, Brethren Christian 0

SEAL BEACH — Liana Korber swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for the Lightning in the Academy League match Tuesday.

Amiria Tarsadia swept at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, and Molly Wang swept at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 for Sage Hill (12-3, 7-2 in league).


Calvary Chapel 13, Estancia 5

COSTA MESA — Senior Christy Brown swept at No. 1 singles for the visiting Eagles in the Orange Coast League match Tuesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Brown avenged losses to Calvary's Nos. 1 and 2 singles players in their first-round meeting. Brown's scores were 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.

Estancia is 3-12, 2-7 in league.



Corona del Mar 15, Woodbridge 6

CORONA DEL MAR — Matt Sherburne had four goals for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday, when CdM hosted a leukemia awareness day.

Ty Hack added three goals for CdM (16-5, 8-0 in league), which had 24 players compete in the game. Goalies AJ Santa Maria (nine saves) and Patrick McKenzie (three saves) also contributed.

The Sea Kings played in honor of Kimie Metcalf, 6, the daughter of CdM Coach Barry O'Dea's friend. She has leukemia.

The Sea Kings wore special orange caps in support of Kimie, who was at the match. Snack bar proceeds from Tuesday went to support the Leukemia Lymphomia Society, in honor of Kimie, and there was an orange booth with items like T-shirts and wristbands for sale.

Kimie and her family were introduced prior to the game.



Corona del Mar def. Woodbridge

CORONA DEL MAR — Haley Hodson had eight kills to help the Sea Kings to a 25-11, 25-20, 25-8 Pacific Coast League win Tuesday.

Chrissy Watson and Grace Kennedy had seven kills each, while Shannon Griffin had six kills for CdM (23-2, 7-0 in league).


Calvary Chapel def. Estancia

COSTA MESA — Calvary Chapel won the Orange Coast League match, 25-10, 25-9, 25-20, at home Tuesday.
