College Roundup: OCC men, women win OEC titles

Orange Empire Conference Meet

RIVERSIDE — The Orange Coast College men’s and women’s teams each won team titles at the meet hosted by Riverside College Friday.

For the OCC women, it was the 16th consecutive OEC title, dating back to 1996. On the men’s side, the Pirates won their seventh conference title over the past nine seasons.

Led by sophomore standout Meghan Foley, the OCC women nearly pulled off the perfect top-five score and totaled 16 points, with Fullerton (77) taking second place and Riverside (82) placing third.

Foley won the OEC title with a winning 5K time of 20 minutes, 14.5 seconds. Close behind was teammate Analicia Silva, who took second with a time of 20:28.5. Placing third was Chelsea Clifford (20:31.6), while teammate Grace Adams-Andy (20:52.7) finished fourth.

Carmille Garcia nearly cracked the top five, but settled for sixth place with a solid time of 21:02.

For the OCC men, it was a five-man, top-10 performance that led the Pirates to the title, finishing with 25 points. Defending champion Riverside took second place with 43 points, while Saddleback (64) finished third.

Leading the Pirate runners through the four-mile course was sophomore Zachary Ellis, who finished third with a time of 21:39.8. Saddleback’s Ricardo Campuzano won the OEC individual title with a time of 21:28.7.

OCC sophomore Michael Taylor was close behind Ellis with a fourth-place time of 21:42 and he was followed by the trio of Matt Bottomley (fifth, 21:49.9), Austin Little (sixth, 21:50.5) and Hugo Gutierrez (seventh, 21:51.4).

Next up for the Pirates will be the Southern California Regional Meet, set for Friday at 9 a.m. at Gusti Park in Rancho Cucamonga.

MEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 3, Irvine Valley 2

IRVINE — Chase Nugent, Dong-Gi Shin and Antonio Gonzalez scored for the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Jose Rodriguez, Brandon Bauman and Victor Lopez had assists for OCC (20-6, 6-4 in conference).

IVC is now 10-5-2, 6-3-1.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 6, Irvine Valley 0

COSTA MESA —Emma Pridmore had two goals and two assists for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Single goals were turned in by Cindy Rubio, Nicole Vanderlaan, Jessica Parker and Brooke Springer for OCC (10-3-4, 8-2-3 in conference). Jessica Amaral dished out a pair of assists, while solo helpers were contributed by Vanderlaan and Shannon Bolotin.

It was a match controlled from start to the finish by the Pirates as they outshot the Lasers 20-1. OCC goalkeeper Katie O’Banion came up with the lone shot on goal to record the shutout win.

The Lasers are 2-11-3, 1-9-3.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Riverside

COSTA MESA — Karlee Riggs recorded a match-high 22 kills to lead the Pirates to the 25-12, 25-20, 25-22 Orange Empire Conference win Friday.

Dana Nicholson had seven kills, seven digs and three aces. Libero Andi Frisina led the OCC (13-2, 8-1 in conference) with eight digs, and setter Allison Lumsden notched 39 assists.

Riverside is 9-11, 2-7.

Up next for the Pirates will be a crucial home showdown with Irvine Valley on Wednesday night, beginning at 7 p.m.

MEN’S GOLF

Cabo Collegiate

SAN JOSE del CABO, Mexico — UC Irvine fell to 11th place and sophomore Allan Jun is 29th to pace the Anteaters’ individuals after Friday’s second round at Club Campestre Golf Course.

Pete Fernandez is 39th for UCI, which at 609 is 52 shots behind 36-hole leader Arkansas. The final round is scheduled Saturday.
