SAN JOSE — Newport Harbor High won the title Saturday at Bellarmine Prep after topping Coronado, 8-6, in the championship match.

Senior Farrel South and junior Curtis Fink each scored twice in the final for the Sailors, who won their second tournament of the year after capturing the S&R Cup on Oct. 8.

It’s the first time Newport Harbor has won the Memorial Cup since 2008. Newport Harbor had lost in the final the last two years.

Dan Stevens, Andrew Silvers, Ryan Fowler and Mitchell Mendoza added goals for Newport Harbor (22-1), which won its 15th straight match. Goalie Koby Yokota made nine saves.

Newport Harbor reached the final after topping host Bellarmine Prep, 13-5, in the semifinals. Fowler and South had four goals each.

The Sailors, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division I, close out Sunset League play in their regular-season finale against Marina on Wednesday.

Finis Memorial Cup

SAN JOSE — Corona del Mar High defeated host Bellarmine Prep, 10-8, to finish third on Saturday.

Ari Marks, Charlie Howarth and Ben Zepfel each scored two goals against Bellarmine. The Sea Kings lost their semifinal match, 15-14, after Coronado scored a goal in the final seconds.

Zepfel had five goals and drew four ejections for CdM. Reid Chase had three goals, while Howarth and Wes Sherburne scored twice each.

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Corona del Mar High defeated Santa Barbara for third place Saturday at Santa Barbara High.

The Sea Kings fell to Los Angeles Marymount in four sets in a semifinal earlier Saturday. CdM is ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division I-A, with Marymount at No. 2.

CdM (26-3) plays at Beckman in a key Pacific Coast League match Tuesday.

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Newport Harbor High swept Santa Margarita, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17, in the ninth-place match Saturday at Santa Barbara High.

Earlier Saturday the Sailors got by Archbishop Mitty, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 15-10.

Senior Cinnamon Sary had a combined 39 kills in the two matches. Senior Kasey Thompson added a combined 19 kills and sophomore Carolyn Bockrath added 16.

Torey Thompson (82 total assists) and Tatum Norton (23 digs) also assisted the Sailors in the two matches. Niki Fitzsimons had three aces against Archbishop Mitty.

Newport Harbor (18-8) plays at Fountain Valley on Tuesday.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior Paige Tennison finished second to lead Newport Harbor High to a second-place finish Saturday at Central Park.

Tennison finished the three-mile course in 17 minutes, 18 seconds. Tennison qualified individually and the Sailors qualified as a team for the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries Nov. 12 at Mt. SAC.

Leah VanDyke (seventh in 18:49), Maggie Goodson (10th in 19:02), Kaitlyn Mead (16th in 19:22), Katherine Maddox (17th in 19:22), Makenna Owen (23rd in 19:39) and Ashley Ima (25th in 19:53) also competed for the Sailors.

Marina won the team crown.

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior Jake Barber finished third to lead Newport Harbor High to a fourth-place finish on Saturday at Central Park.

Barber completed the three-mile course in 15 minutes, 37 seconds to qualify for the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries on Nov. 12 at Mt. SAC.

Jason Moreno (14th in 16:36), Steven Pratty (36th in 18:06), Raul Padilla (37th in 18:11), David Vorona (38th in 18:29) and Fernando Garcia (40th in 18:37) also competed for the Sailors.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

San Juan Hills 13, Estancia 12 (OT)

LAKE ELSINORE — Senior Paul Sugano-Dyson scored eight goals for the Eagles in the nonleague game Saturday at Lakeside High.

Senior Max Hume added three goals for Estancia (9-17). On Friday, the Eagles also lost at Lakeside, 12-9, despite six goals from Sugano-Dyson.

Estancia’s season finale is at home against Savanna on Wednesday.
