Briefs: Brothers capture crowns

Monday was quite a day in the Di Giulio household.

Joseph Di Giulio and his younger brother, Austin, each won junior tennis titles at the Mike Agassi "No Quit" Championships in Las Vegas.

The Newport Beach residents each had impressive victories in their final match. Top-seeded Joseph Di Guilio came back to beat No. 2-seeded William Griffith of Fresno, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5, in the boys' 16-and-under championship match.

Austin Di Giulio was unseeded, but he breezed past Zummy Bauer of Georgia, 6-1, 6-1, to win the boys' 12s title.

Joseph is ranked No. 49 nationally by the United States Tennis Assn. in boys' 16s. He also had to come back to win his quarterfinal match in the tournament, a three-set affair against Logan Staggs of Tracy.

Joseph and his doubles partner, Benjamin Donovan of Tennessee, finished third in boys' 16s doubles at the Mike Agassi tournament.

Austin, ranked No. 12 in Southern California in boys' 12s, did not lose a set in claiming the Las Vegas singles crown. He and his doubles partner, Gavin Spencer of San Juan Capistrano, finished second after they were edged in the final by top-seeded Michael Bautista of Washington and Joe Hardwicke of Oregon, 9-8 (7), in the eight-game pro set format.
