SANTA ANA — Freshmen Karlee Riggs and Morgan Link had 11 kills to help the Pirates to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 Orange Empire Conference win Friday.

Freshman setter Allison Lumsden had 29 assists, while sophomore Katherine Wichner and freshman Andi Frisina had 10 digs each for OCC (14-2, 10-1 in conference).

Santa Ana is 2-13, 0-11.

The Pirates play host to rival Golden West for first place in the OEC Wednesday at 7 p.m.

SANTA BARBARA — Aly Squires had 14 kills and 14 digs to pace the visiting Anteaters in the 25-22, 25-21, 25-20 Big West Conference verdict Friday.

Shannon Fleming had five kills, six block assists and one solo block for UCI (9-14, 3-7 in conference).

UCSB is 9-14, 3-7.

Chapman 11, Vanguard 10

ORANGE — Sophomore Kyle Kim-E scored five goals for the Lions in the nonconference double-overtime game Friday.

Chapman scored twice in the first overtime. But Vanguard responded with goals from Jason Lee and Sean Little.

Chapman’s Brett Carter scored with 1:50 left for the sudden-death goal.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 95, Simpson 81

COSTA MESA — Senior Chris Kupets scored a game-high 38 points to lead the Lions to the season-opening nonconference win Friday.

Junior Taylor Kelly added 14 points for Vanguard (0-1).

Kupets, a 6-foot guard, shot 15 for 21 from the field and three for five on his three-pointers. He was also five for six from the free-throw line.

Orange Empire Conference Championships

RIVERSIDE — Orange Coast went 1-1 during the first day of the tournament at Riverside City College on Thursday.

OCC, seeded fourth, opened with a 13-9 win over No. 5-seeded Cypress before falling to top-seeded Golden West, 9-6.

Alyssa Katreeb led the Pirates (20-7) with four goals, while Erika Castello added three and Cherokee Stephens and Danielle Lopez each threw in two goals against Cypress.

Cailend Robbins notched 14 saves to earn the victory.

Katreeb and Castello each had two goals agaisnt Golden West (18-2).

OCC meets Fullerton for third place Saturday at 12:45 p.m.

Orange Empire Conference Championships

RIVERSIDE — Orange Coast College lost to host Riverside, 12-8, in the semifinals Friday and will meet Fullerton for third place Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Riverside City College.

Ian Kistle and Teddy Bandaruk had three goals apiece for the Pirates.
